When I start to use a new reed, I always sanitize it dipping it in H2O2 or ReedLife to kill micro oranism who shorten Reed lives.(I know also Japanese tea has sanitization ability.)
But they have drawbacks:cancer inducing possibility for H2O2 and high cost for ReedLife.
Impacted somewhat by 'hot sause' posting, I found another way:
Gum dental care liquid, which kills germs inside mouth, includes Vitamin E, and lasts long. Can be used both for mouth and reeds.
Obviously,it is not bad for mouth and Vitamin E is known good to avoid anything organic from getting rotten. How is this idea?
I dip 4 reeds and will wait for 2 days to dry up in my ReedGuard.
P.S. To wet before using reeds, I use mineral water not city potable water. It feels better. Soft kind(less Ca+) seems better. No scientific background.

I always floss and brush before playing. I can't stand the thought of food-tainted saliva in my clarinet. On nights I have band practice, I get a little hungry not eating until
10pm, but it keeps the weight down. Michael

Dear Hiroshi:
I know the guy that makes Reedlife, one of the crazy band of chemists here at work, and he tells me that the peroxide is gone (and indeed inactivated back to good old H20) after the reed drys. His formulation also contains some other stuff that is good for reeds - e.g. a humectant (to keep the reed from drying out too much). It is expensive but given the cost of reeds and preserving the good ones that we get - it is a very economical investment. The dental care rinse May?? be an alternative but it was never intended to do what you are asking it to perform. The Reedlife representative will be at Clarinetfest and should be able to answer any questions we may have.

Not numbering myself among "crazy band of chemists" [LOH] since I'm a Chomical Engr. [slight diff!], I agree Reedlife is OK, re: H2O2, any "nacent" oxygen will be gone shortly, but I suggest against mouthwashes etc since reading the list of ingredients and the "Do Not Swallow" warning is intimidating, who knows what residual effects there might be? Its still hard to beat saliva followed by good water! Don

Don!!! You are so . . . PRAGMATIC! Don't you realize that as a result of your practice, your mouth could be full of . . . MICROORGANISMS!!! The have probably gone all through your digestive tract as well!!
There is an obvious need for a new federal entity to study, regulate, and tax this "reed thing" before this generation of clarinetists is killed off like those of yesteryear. And remember, it's not for us . . . it's for the children.

Gosh and gee-whiz, Fred, I had to look up the def. of prag-- and found it may be a bit "pompous", therefore please accept an apology. I'm sure we all are filled with the little beasties, hopefully most are good! Perhaps the Congress in its --------- [add your own word] can help preserve us. Will ponder and post IF worthwhile thots come forth. ?Selah? Don

Just an FYI - Selah means rest or pause. It's used in the Bible in the Psalms.
Have a great weekend!

Selah - "pause, meditate on this before you skip over it without considering it". In this case, smile, chuckle, and shake your head over the attitude that someone has to save us from ourselves.
Don, I always enjoy your posts. Keep'em coming! And thanks, Pam, for the interpretation.

Me, too!
As for the germy reeds, I don't try to really sterilize them. That's a lost cause anyway. My mouth isn't sterile, either, but I don't seem to be dropping dead. Besides, I don't want the bugs to build up a tolerance for germ-killers and turn into super-bugs that might make me sick and then resist antibiotic drugs. Rinsing with plain water does quite a lot just by physically evicting varmints so there are fewer of them to set up housekeeping. Occasional mouthwash on the reed keeps ahead of the remaining squatters. I think it's possible to overdo the "Raaiiiiiidddd!" syndrome. But I don't want the reed to start looking like the bottom of a boat, either....
