Finally! A Voxman "Concert & Contest" CD
Author: hinotehud 2017

For years, I've been telling prfoessional clarinetists I knew that someone needs to record the solos in the "Concert & Contest" Collection by Voxman. 50% of the clarinet solos I judge (Michigan) are from that book. Now Paul & Ralph Votapek have produced a marvelous CD that was advertised in the latest issue of "The Clarinet" magazine. I ordered one last week and it came today. I put it on immediatley and was not disappointed. I knew how wonderful Ralph Votapek was on piano from my years at Michigan State. Paul is also a terrific musician who studied with Clark Brody, Robert Marcellus and Frank Kowalsky.

Robert McGinnis had a record of seven of thse solos in the early '60's that has not been available for years. (This CD is a far superior recording in my view.)

Every clarinet teacher and band director should own this CD! I can't count how many times I heard Mozart's "Menuet from Divertimento" butchered (partly from Voxman's articulation markings), or how many times I heard Koepke's "Scherzo" where the soloist had no idea how to play a cadenza. The opening of "Scene and Air" is often played without emotion and nuance. The Mozart "Adagio" is recorded with piano and Bb clarinet so the student can play right along. (Maybe now they will play the grace notes correctly.)

Paul Votapek plays with an exquisite tone and flawless technique. I think his interpretations are right on. If Rubank, Inc. was smart, they would market this CD with their book.

My endorsement was totally unsolicited. I am just excited that this is finally out and perhaps I will hear better performances. I want to help spread the word and hope you support his project. If interested you can order one at:
Paul Votapek 112 Flame Vine Drive Naples FL 34110 for $17.00 total. His email address is: votapek@comcast.net

I stumbled upon this post, and couldn't agree with you more! Mr. Votapek is a fantastic musician, and equally skilled as a teacher. I will be showing this post, (even though it is from 2007) to Mr. Votapek at my next lesson as I'm sure he'll get a kick out of it!

So how should the grace notes be played correctly?
