Nickko, just some further thoughts:

Does it really matter what DG stands for, or why the type was invented if you like it as much as you do? Better perhaps to ask "Why is it different to my R13?".

If your teacher is a Buffet fanantic then he can surely tell you the answer to these points or give you the name of someone who can.

Small makers' instruments are very tempting, and there are other names to add to the two Mario has given. But they are generally much more expensive, in many cases you order the instruments and accept what is made for you (perhaps months later) without the right to trial several examples (this is not the case with all the small makers though), and let's face it, as in the example you have given, many top professionals play on Buffets Selmers etc., so the differences between these big brands and the smaller ones will be ones of preference and opinion, not an earth shattering difference in quality.
