 Music stores in Washington
Author: Sodapop

Hi. I'm not quite sure this belongs here, but I'll try anyway.
I am going to Washington DC over easter and was wondering if anyone knows about some music stores there. I've been trying to find something on the internet, but it's not working so far.
By asking on forehand I hope I can avoid the rock/pop stores that only sell guitars and drums and that kind of stuff and go directly to the good (proper, serious) classical stores, the ones that sell sheet music for the clarinet, classical, klezmer, etc (Anything other than Disney for the clarinet)... I'd also be really grateful if someone knows of a store that has Buffet Crampon instruments and parts. I am in desperate need of a shorter barrel for my R13 Buffet Crampon A-clarinet, and I'm sure it's a hell of a lot cheaper over there than here in Norway...

So, in short: If anyone knows of a good music store in Washington, please let me know!
Thanks

You are looking for Washington Music Center. I believe they have a website, but I haven't looked it up. If you have trouble searching, also try Chcuk Levn's Washington Music Center.

It is in Wheaton, MD, very close off the Metro.

For sheet music, you can check out Dale's Music in Silver Spring.
Dale Music Company Incorporated
8240 Georgia Ave
Silver Spring, MD 20910
(301) 589-1459

For barrels, mouthpieces, instruments, etc., I go to Vince Marinelli in Wilmington, DE. It's a 2.5 hour drive from D.C., but it's the closest place I know of that has an excellent selection of that kind of stuff. Vince is very friendly and helpful.

Marinelli Vincent Sr
3612 Silverside Rd
Wilmington, DE 19810

There is Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center in Wheaton, MD, but I don't think they usually have a good selection of barrels in stock. Here is their website if you want to have a look.

There is also the chain Music and Arts, but they aren't as specialized as what you're looking for. They do have some sheet music, but mostly common stuff that students use.

Happy shopping, and have a safe trip. It is like summer here today! Much different from Norway, I'm sure.

In Falls Church, Fox's Music is really good. They are located on S. Washington St. in Falls Church. The afore-mentioned are also good.

I would recommend L & L Music-Wind Shop in Gaithersburg, MD, 301-949-7273 if you are looking for pro level instruments. They were recommended to me by Fox's in Falls Church as having the best prices when I was looking to purchase my R13.

One quick question, what kind of store is Fox's music, instruments (woodwind, all kinds?) or sheet music?

It's actually Foxes Music, not Fox's music.

It's actually a little of everything. The front of the shop holds a muic collection. Instrumental music (solos and method books) from strings to band are in file cabinets that are stacked and lined up one wall. Piano and guitar music is in the walking areas. Behind the counter, they stock reeds and mouthpieces. I know that if you are looking for a specific piece of music and they don't have it, they'll order it for you and call you by phone when it arrives. I would suspect that they would carry several but not all big name mpc mfrs. Last time I tried mpcs there, they had Vandorens and Hites. I would doubt that they would sell Buffet barrels.

Just to finish up the back section is guitars. The side section holds some very small studio rooms where students can get private instruction. I took some lessons there back in the 90's.

Here's the Foxes Music store info:

Probably be best to call before you go to Washington Music Center for specific items (i.e., barrels). If they don't have what you're looking for then they could offer where to go in the DC area (though, they carry a large inventory...). The point of contact at the Washington Music Center is below (Byron is a retire musician with the Navy Band and was quite helpful when I visited the store).
