If a you can hit 92 dB at the correct pitch, you can (perhaps) shatter a wine glass. http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_333.html

Has anyone done or seen this. It would probably take someone like Anthony Gigliotti (who could play amazingly loud) to do it. BTSOOI.

Braniac, the same show who did the experiment I posted (with the helium) did exactly this experiment. They took a wine glass, and an opera singer tried to break it with the correct pitch. It didn't work. Then they got a rock band to play really loud and put the wine glass near the guitar amp. It took a while but evetually it broke.

Oh, I thought this was about the Hazel O'Connor film!

I remember seeing this done on telly (late '70s or early '80s) where the singer's voice was amplified and the glass was placed right next to the speaker.

. . . sound was amplified . . . glass right next to speaker . . . yep, wouldn't even need a hammer, would you? If it was loud enough it might even break a cast iron anvil! Eu

And, how does one determine the pitch?, fundemental, or like the oboe etc 1st overtone [octave] which, I'm told, has the greater volume. I recall inducing a musical tone by circling [sp?] a wine glass rim with a wetted finger, would that be its critical pitch?? Acoustic advice needed !! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I think the resonant frequency of a glass is the same as when played with a wetted finger.

If you ping a glass you hear more overtones.

And then there's the way The Fat Lady (doorkeeper to the Griffyndor quarters) shatters glass in one of the "Harry Potter" movies.... ;-)

I'll bet I could break glass with my voice with the greatest of ease. All I'd have to do is catch people standing around innocently with their beverages on a hard surface, such as a brick terrace. Without warning, I'd belt out a tune--any tune would do--in my usual key of Way Off. They'd drop their glasses as they run, screaming....
