Could it be that you are "pinching" with your embouchure? I have always had this habit on the soprano horns, and found out long ago that a softer reed and a more relaxed (yet still firm) setting of the lips and face was the way out.

I used to play 3.5 Vandornes on both bass and soprano horns, but have (over the last ten years or so) moved to a more open mouthpiece and softer reeds, all with excellent results. Part of this may be due to the fact that I play more sax these days, but it's still working out better for me at this time.

Playing on ever harder reeds seems to be a mark of maturity in the eyes of some students, yet you can do just fine on something a bit softer (and not kill yourself in the process).

Besides the player another factor is the mouthpiece/reed combo. A hard reed and a mouthpiece with a small chamber can really bring the pitch up. If you have clarinetist friends try their equipment.

I also seem to remember seeing here that 2 players playing the same horn may sound quite a bit different pitch wise. It had to do with players from the London Symphony experimenting. Anybody remembers the post?

Please refer to the posting about the Brainiac video from clarnibass. This may be your answer.

Clarinets tend to play sharper little by little the more they are used. When I first got my clarinet I could comfortably play on a 66 barrel. After 5 years of rigorous use I now have to use a 67 and still pull out. Some clarinets just play sharper than others as well. Also, there's nothing wrong with playing a 67 barrel. It could still be the problems that are listed above from the other posters as well.

I used to play very sharp on my 67mm barrel. I always had to pull it way out. Then I switched to 3.5 V12 reeds (from 4's) and started working out of Larry Guy's book "Embouchure Building for Clarinetists." My intonation has improved greatly since then. I'm not sure which was the one that did it, but both were life-changing.
