Hello
In our local university there is also a small museum of instruments. There are about 10 unique clarinets (old ones, strange keys, etc.) and one of them is either a contra-alt or contrabass. It is metal and it is a Buffet (I'll double check next time I'm there). When did Buffet make contras? Is it possible it is a contrabass even? Any information on them?
Thanks.

Buffet presently makes an Eb contra, but I don't think they sell very many. Last year, their U.S. rep. told me he knew of none in the U.S. I think the reason that the price is astronomical, and they were introduced comparatively recently compared with the Selmer and Leblanc contras, so there are no used ones floating around.
The market is saturated with used Selmers and Leblancs at the high end and Vitos and Bundy/Lintons at the low end.
Also, I've never seen or heard of a Buffet metal contra. Check whether it's a Besson.

OK, I double checked. The logo is a bit worn but from what is left it's still obvious that it is a Buffet Crampon clarinet. Anyone has any information on Buffet metal contra clarinets?
Thanks.

According to the catalog, currently Buffet makes an EEb contra, not the BBb. It goes down to low Eb and it is made of Granadilla wood.

I have seen photos of the metal Buffet contra that is shaped like a half "paperclip" similar to the Orsi contra.
Anyway you can sneak in a camera and post some pictures for us?

The "paperclip" nomeclature in the context of contrabass clarinets is normally applied to the Leblanc models 340 and 350. The metal Buffet contra might have been a Leblanc. But Buffet did in fact manufacture a metal contrabass in the shape quite similar to the Eppelsheim model.'

No need to sneak, the only thing keeping me from doing this is my memory Anyway I'll just try to remember next time I'm there.
