Amazing, such smooth playing...
I was never a big fan of Karl Leister, but I may change my mind. The playing is so smooth, musical and shows such control. The other two players are also amazing.
It 's funny how such easy music at first sight can really display how brilliant this ensemble is. The intonation, tone everything matches perfectly. I am in awe...

Really beautiful, heavenly. Is that a full Boehm he's playing?

Not full Boehm. Mr Leister is playing a Herbert Wurlitzer 100c (Oehler system).

I think the original arrangement is for three basset horns.

Hi Kilo,
No, not a boehm system clarinet.........it's a german Oehler system clarinet.
It may be the expensive Wurlitzer used by many of the german symphony
players. He also may be using the string ligature.

John, thanks for the link. Amazing musicianship displayed by this trio.
Karl is a beautiful player. Is that a string ligature he is using?

Yet another good reason for me taking to playing Oehler system clarinets!
Cheers John (and Karl Leister)!

Thanks John, a great video of three great players.
Martin,
Yes, it's a string ligature on both, I've seen serval videos with Karl playing and I can't recall him ever using anthing else.
Chris,
You might enjoy the Reformed Boehm Wurlizter instead of the Oehler system. According to Herbert Wurlitzer, the Reformed Boehm has that great "German" sound...

Yes, great playing but I found the gymnastics rather distracting.

Absolutely beautiful. All the motion is typical of German players. I don't find it distracting at all. When I last heard the Berlin Philharmonic, I had never seen such motion. Maybe they actually enjoy music. (:

It's so smooth that I could cry. It's so frozen in place that I could cry. And when I was beginning to learn the clarinet the first thing I was told was don't bite. How he bites makes me wanna cry. Leister bites way far much more than the other clarinet player playing with him in this video. For good German style of playing I recomend Sabine Meyer. Better tone, more relaxed and soft but has that German smooth tone without being so BORING.

All it takes is for someone to be completely over-judgemental to remind you of the times you have been, and maybe even to curb your habits a little!

William - Karl will be in Madison on April 29! That is fantastic! Could you give me any information about this? Is it a campus function, ticket, or first come? He is a favorite of mine and Madison is only 45 minutes away
Thanks so much for that info!!
