A couple of nights ago I watched the last episode of Seinfeld, yes haha, where the jury was deciding whether to send the quartet of misfits to jail, for about 3 minutes there was a background soundtrack of a bass clarinet solo with piano accompaniment. A slow sludging temp where the bass clarinet sounded really sinister, great sound. If you happen to come across this episode, pay attention. It came on about 15 minutes before the end.

It's the "theme" of the show (usually heard during the outtros and intros from each commercial break), only slowed down and made "sinister". It's in keeping with the mood of that portion of the show, which features the bit characters for one last time as the jury deliberates.
There are a lot of nifty bass clarinet lines in movie and television soundtracks. Of course, not one in a hundred knows what it is, but what can you do?

I think "Objects in Space" would be one of my favorite episodes of "Firefly" even if it weren't for the prominent use of solo bass clarinet in its score. Very nice bit of music.
If you haven't seen it, do -- and if you haven't seen any of "Firefly", do rent or borrow the DVDs or download it from iTunes and watch it all; it was a great series, sabotaged by a stupid network. "Objects in Space" is truly remarkable. It was the last episode... hmm, is there some sort of correlation between bass clarinets and last episodes?
(It's been 35 years since my bass clarinet playing days in high school, and to this day if I hear a bass clarinet solo in a TV or movie soundtrack, instantly I'm paying attention to the music and losing track of the show!)

The instrument is commonly used to depict some sort of ongoing skullduggery, usually during the run up to a murder or something equally morbid. Not the best thoughts to have associated with an instrument, but you take what you can get when you're a bass clarinetist.
The old CBS Mystery Theater, heard late at night on CBS Radio in the 1970's and 1980's, had a theme that featured a long and slow bass clarinet solo. Never seen it written out, however.
