When Did Selmer Drop the Bundy Name?
Author: Andy Brendler

Selmer doesn't appear to use the Bundy name any more, except on some accessories. At their web site I see the "Selmer" 1400B listed with a Bundy mouthpiece. (They also fondly recall that it was the 1400 that started the Bundy line.) I've also seen ads for used Selmer 1400's with pictures showing a Selmer, not Bundy, name.

In the early 70's, fellow students tended to look down on the Bundy name as a substandard Selmer. (The "Strad Syndrome?") And now, "Married With Children" has given a whole new meaning to the name Bundy. Did they drop the Bundy name on their clarinets? When?

Andy

Interesting points.....and I can find no clear answer. For instance, the Fall/Winter 1999 WW & BW catalog lists the following:
Page 31: Bundy 1400 & 1401 Resonite Beginning Clarinets
Page 34: Bundy 1403P Resonite Bass Clarinet
Also, when I looked on the Selmer web site last week, I could not find any more information. I am still interested in where/when the Selmer CL370 Alto Clarinet was part of the product offering.....and is it significantly different from the Model 1425 in the current line.

Cheers,
Mike Hancock

I couldn't find anything at the Selmer site, so I just posted a question on their BBoard. I'll post the answer here, if I get one.

In my newest Muncy catalog [no date found] Front page upper right "Hot Summer Savings ----", on Selmer's pg. 5 see "Sel. USA Student" box showing a .577 bore!! and 2 more, which might be the Bundy line-up. Luck, Don

I heard a "rumor" that Selmer closed their Bundy clarinet division and their main instrument designer went to work for Jupiter.

This may explain why Jupiter instruments have improved over the past few years.

So what is the Selmer 1400x? Did they once make Bundy and Selmer labeled 1400's simultaneously, or did the Selmer branded 1400 only appear in the last few years?

If you will look in the Muncy, the Model 1400 is the .590", straight tone holes, Ni plate Sel USA, and the 1401 is the .577 "molded bore" undercut tone hole model, with the CL 300 a .573 reamed bore, undercut, with "student pricing". Luck, Don
