 Albert lenght/pitch

Can you tell whether or not an Albert clarinet ( or any old clarinet for that matter) is high or low pitch from it's length?

Yes and no - it depends on the length of the bell and barrel as all makes have different length bells, and barrels could have been shortened or may not be the original.

Tonehole placement is a better way to check if it's sharp pitch, though you do have to check the 'like-for-like' toneholes, eg. the distance between the centres of the throat A tonehole and LH 3 tonehole (that ISSUES the note D or upper register A), RH 3 (that ISSUES lower A or upper E) and the distances between the larger toneholes on the bottom joint, and compare them with a current Boehm system. If the distances between the toneholes in question are significantly smaller, then it's sharp pitch.

The opinions I express are my own.

Assuming the instrument is playable, would not a tuning fork suffice..........or an in-tune piano.....................or one those new-fangled electronic gadets?

I like Chris' scientific approach to pitch determination, but, if at all possible, would try Ned's playing method, even if only open G were playable vs a tuner or a well tuned piano. Don

Here's a good free tuner for PC and (older) Macs: http://www1.ocn.ne.jp/~tuner/tuner_e.html.

Obviously, if it was in hand, I could tell. This is one I'm thinking of buying from an auction site.

My apologies for "Oblivliousness", Frank, didn't realize you had only pics. You might ask seller for a measurement of assembled barrel, U J, L J, bell length, and compare as best you can, and post here for what help we can give. Much luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

No need to apopogize. For reasons I can't fully explain, I've got an itch to get a usable Albert. I bought a nice Hard rubber Conn from Ebay a year or two ago....you guessed it...high pitch ! ( entirely my fault...serial # had an "h" in it...Duh !) I'm looking at an old Albert Buffet...no cracks....New Orleans, here I come ! Thanks to all.
