Bottom lip pain after a long rehearsal
Author: Kontragirl

I'm leaving for Europe on Wednesday, I'm just so excited. I'm going with an honor band so we had a long weekend of practices. Now my bottom lip is all messed up. It hurts and you can see where the egdes of my reed was. Is there anything I can do about it? Is there anything I can do to prevent this in the future? Thanks!

Is the pain cause from the reed, or from your lip pressing on your teeth?
if it is from your teeth Your dds may be able to fix you for a soft guard to go over the lower teeth.
have a great trip and have fun.
Where are you going?

Try searching the Sneezy & Klarinet Archives for lower lip pain, pain in lower teeth, and its variations.

You should be able to find something there.

Hey
Don't you hate that ?! Last night after practicing, my lip was soo swollen, that I couldn't talk, i still have the reed mark. Just rest from playing ( well, as much as you can ) and try sucking ice cubes - it will relieve the pain. If all else fails - tylonol.

Have fun in Europe ! I'll be thinkin about ya -

Yes, icecubes might be a good idea!
Or just dip a facecloth or something like that into water and put it in the fridge for about an hour. Then put it on your lip - it cools for a long time.
You can also put camomile tea on a cotten pad on you lips.

I can't wait to hear what your doing in Europe, wich countrys and citys will you visit?

Greetings from Germany

Alexa

I'm going to England (London), France (Paris), Austria (For and hour or so), Lichtenstein (Not very long there either), Italy (Venice), and Germany (Dachau and Frankfurt). I think I even got the order right.

I'm going to try the tea routine tonight, but until then I'll try ice cubes, that is so obvious, yet I didn't even think of it. I used a denture pad for my bottom teeth Sunday, and it didn't get much worse so I think it was my teeth. I don't have to play again until our next concert in London, and I've got the music down so I won't be playing until then. Next time I'll have chap stick and denture pads.

I'm not sure what I'm doing in every country, every time I make plans to do something it falls through. A few of us wanted to see Phantom of the Opera in London, but tickets are hard to get. In Paris I wanted to go to the basement of the opera house, but they closed it off. They made the underground lake into a reservoir (if anyone is familiar with POTO you know what I'm talking about). So I guess I could sit in Box 5, but that wouldn't be as neat (but it would still be fun). Oh well, I'll let you know what I decide to do instead. And if I don't come back, I guess you all know where I am ;)

Last minute plans are the most fun (in my opinion).

As a long-term cure, have you thought of using the "double-lip embouchure" which is quite effective in curing the problem of biting, or lower jaw pressure ?
Good luck on your trip. Karel.

I'm doubling on Sax. This idea is from Sax BBS.
1.Go to the drug store and get EZO Denture Cushions. They come in white and pink. Get the white ones (so they blend in with your teeth). Cut one in half and then fold that piece in half. Put that on your bottom front teeth. After your saliva softens it, it will mold to your teeth. It will prevent the cutting and sore lips. They last for a long time, and they kep their mold once dry. It might feel weird for the first 15 minutes or so, but after that, you'll forget it's there, and never play without one if you have that problem.
2.You can also try Bay Lip Easy from WW&BW.
Hope this help.

If you like shopping check out Oxford Street in London- it has really incredible shops but is more expensive that the US. If you want history/culture the Tower of London, a boat trip on the Themes and Buckingham Palace are good bets. If you want to see Phantom (or pretty much anything) you should try to book tickets ASAP! Enjoy it!

Chloe my friend, you beat me to it. Oh, and I don't mean to be insulting, but isn't it called the 'Thames', not 'Themes'.
