I am wondering if anyone knows how big the clarinet- market is.
How many clarinets are sold each year? Student-level, intermediate, profesional.
If someone know the percentage of the diferent marks, it would be interesting too..

This is a moving target that is constantly shifting.
A related thread was done several years ago.

Interesting question!
I once wondered about this and realised that you may get an approximate answer by looking at the various Ebay site: ebay.com, ebay.it, ebay, fr...etc and simply count the instruments.
Then you get into the question of what is student/intermediate...etc which is bound to keep the forum busy till the sun goes supernova! ;-)

Considering all the school programs, I suspect that eBay is just the tip of the iceberg.

Let's concentrate on professional models.
From the serial # of Buffet clarinet, you can say they sell about 15,000
of them each year.
Divide this nember by the market share in fraction.
If we take conservative number say 30%(=0.3),then we can safely say
that about 50,000 clarinets are sold worldwide .
If we count CSO,make that times ten.

I read on Lisa's web-site that 87 out every 100 new clarinets sold are Buffet.

I read some years ago that Buffet makes 15.000 clarinets each year and that they makes more clarinets than all other makers togheter, so at least they make 50% plus 1 clarinet.
So, at the most, the market is 30.001 clarinets/year

My obervation is that if one looked at clarinet sales on the world wide market closely, the majority would appear to "be flat"................................

I wonder how Buffet clarinet sales are doing now that their retail price has been increased 50% and more everywhere.
A terrific mark up now for WWBW and others. Their sales could drop 30 or 40% and they would still be making more that before.
Rough on new buyers...but Selmer is still making great clarinets!
