 Back from camp!
Author: Nick Conner

I just got back from IU band camp, and it was great! I learned a lot. My question, though, is that I switched from a bunched chin to a pointed chin while I was there, and I'm really having a lot of trouble with sound and stability. I've moved down reed sizes (from 4's to 3's). Will things get easier as all the muscles develop? Things are not very good now, and I don't want to waste my time if it isn't going to get better. Thanks.

Sure, your muscles will develop. My old clarinet teacher was also a bodybuilder, and he taught me some amazing things about how to build up strength in your lip muscles. When it comes to strengthening muscles there are certain methods which will maximize your progress. One is called "isolating the muscles". By bunching the chin, you were using the jaw to help the lip muscles out. Since the jaw was doing so much work, your embouchure never developed properly. So now just remember to keep the chin down. Eventually you'll have the strength and endurance to go back to harder reeds.

Yes it will get better. It takes a little time to fully incorporate any change. The pointed chin approach will eventually make it easier to be in control of your sound by allowing you greater overall control of your embouchure. But be patient. It takes *TIME*.

one way you can speed up the building a tad is to practice your embouchure while.. of all things.. whistling.. I have almost no ability to whistle.. i can get one note.. but i whistled that one note walking around and wherever and it helped to reinforce the embouchure placement and the chin placement. try it.. it may work for you too! Changing your embouchure is no fun but VERY worth it in the long run.. you probibly would have to do it sooner or later!
