I'm just gonna share a little information about the Carolina Jazz Festival sponsored by Essentially Ellington at UNC-Chapel Hill today. To perform, bands had to to chose ONE song from the Essentially Ellington library. After performing, a mini clinic was done with the band to help them with technique and etc. One of the adjucators for the Big Band contest was Ron Westray, and another was Terri Lynne Carrington. I don't remember the third one. I had the chance to get my clinic with Mr. Westray and wow, this was an amazing experience for 10 minutes.
For jazz combo, the adjucators were Steve Wilson and a pianist by the last name of Alexander; I can't remember his first name. Even though I wasn't in combo, I still listened to their comments to improve. I just never knew how much one could benefit off of this.
I think it is amazing that the Essentially Ellington program sponsors Jazz Festivals like these because it is keeping Jazz alive in with modern music. After today, I don't look at Jazz the same way. After all performances, there was one put on by the UNC-CH jazz band featuring Mr. Westray, Mr. Wilson, and others and I must say that that was as well amazing. I wish my camera had batteries so I could have taken pictures and posted them on here. It was just over all an amazing experience.
Post concert I talked to Mr. Wilson about reeds and mouthpieces and the like considering he does play saxophone, it's still close. I absolutely fell in love with his tone. Jazz needs to be opened up to a wider variety of people so they can appreciate it. I'm looking forward to going again next year.
