Alright, I have an older selmer crystal mp... It is an HS* and is in mediocre condition, there are some slight marks at the tip. This is pretty much what mine is but this is an HS** I am very curious as what is the big price for? is this probably a collector buying this piece or is this what they usually go for? Any and all feedback will be appriciated. Sorry Mr. C if this isn't supposed to be here.

The HS seems to refer to the tip opening or facing. Probably similar new mouthpieces from Selmer can go for as much as $150 retail.

I would suggest you consult the brochures of the instrument sellers, Muncy, Weiner, BW&WW, IMS etc to become acquainted with the enormous variety of facings, bores etc and their pricing. I have several crystals, old O'Briens [short and close], a Selmer Clarion [more to my liking, longer lay and more open tip]which I play on occasion. Also look up earlier thread-posts on glass mp's. I just picked one (a crystal HS**) on eBay for about $80.00, in perfect condition. I can tell you though that in my opinion, the crystal HS** bears very little resemblance to the hard rubber version when you play on it. It has also been out of production for a number of years. After I accidentally shattered mine, it took me about 6 months to find a used one in good condition. So, part of the high price may be attributed to the limited availability and part of it may also be attributed to it's desirability. For me it is a remarkably free-blowing and yet easy to control m'piece. I have tried most of the crystal m'pieces on the market today and none of them are really anything like this model. If I still needed one,I would have paid that much for one in good condition. Maybe I just got lucky. The one I got is in like-new condition.

Are crystal mouthpieces still black like the rubber ones or are they clear? I was thinking about buying a pomarico crystal mouthpiece.

Sara,
crystal is glass. You might want to hold off buying that mouthpiece and write to Pomarico about what you're looking for in terms of sounds. They're very, very nice people!

Sara, Ive tried almost every crystal mouthpiece there is. I went through a stage where I was obsessed with them. They look so cool hehe.....ANyway my point is, (and I do have one), although I don't use crystal anymore, pomarico are definately the best ones around ;)
