I am thinking about changing the pad on my Eb/Ab tone hole on the lower joint. When I use it as a vent when playing high D it adds a particularly shrillness/brightness to the sound. When I don't open the vent it is better, but not up to pitch. I was thinking maybe a different pad could assist in bettering the problem? It is an RC Prestige A clarinet and I think the current pad is gortex or maybe leather.

Changing that pad won't make any difference to the tone quality.

Hi Nick
Why don't you just darken the sound using embouchure/oral cavity adjustments?
My Eb key similarly brightens the high D. But its predictable, so I can do something about it.
If you change the pad that could affect your actual Ab/Eb negatively as well.
Are you still in Sydney?

try half holeing the first finger in the left hand. This is good for quiet legato passages. In fact it works well on all the notes going up to G. There is also the other fingering based on the german system. oxx/xoxeb, the speaker key is open as is the thumb hole. This is great for super pianissimo playing up there.
