I hope this isn't a retirement dinner (selfish of me, I know).

There are still a lot of clarinets to be improved in town. What'll we do?

I met Jimmy a number of years ago when we were exhibiting at a ClarinetFest in Oklahoma and have been friends ever since. If clarinets are animate objects, which I am sure that they are, then he is the Clarinet - Whisperer. When an unwieldy clarinet comes into his hands the love fest begins and with his experienced hands he/she (clarinet) becomes a tame and docile creature. He is one of the most pleasant human beings that I have ever met and constantly has a kind smile on his face. Last summer when I visited him in his upstairs tiny shop off Broadway he remains as warm, humble, and helpful as ever. I consider him to be the Royal Court Technician because his list of customers fills the royal music court of New York City as well as far points across the globe. I hope too that this is just a tribute affair for him and not retirement.

That's wonderful--no less than he deserves. I was picking up my bass from his shop earlier today (same day as the dinner) and when I rang the doorbell, Ron Odrich opened the door and let me in. (For those of you who don't know the shop, it's literally the size of an elongated walk-in closet--there's Jimmy at the far end at his bench, then there's a couch down one wall, a counter down the other, and if you have more than two customers in the space in between, it's instant gridlock.) One time you might be sharing the meager space with a Jim Ognibene or an Al Regni, another time it'll be one of the Juilliard or Mannes kids, trying to get the school's low-c bass serviced, and there's Jimmy at the bench, making it all right and getting the earth back on an even keel.

I'm really, really happy you guys did that-- Jimmy's level of artistry and good-heartedness should always be celebrated. We're lucky to have him.

What a nice pic, but I can't help but wonder...............when did the reed fight begin??? (and who won?)

If I lived in NYC, I'm sure Jimmy Yan would be on my "good guys" list as well. Nevertheless, congradulations from this WI Cheesehead Clarinetist. Recognition well deserved, I'm sure.............

What reed fight? We all had terrific reeds that night, and Jimmy was there to fix any clarinet problems. After the tasty dinner, we all went off to our respective gigs, feeling real good about honoring a deserving man, JIMMY YAN.

I had the pleasure of working with him couple years back when my upper joint cracked. To this day, you can't even tell where the crack was! Hopefully, he'll be around for many more years!

Good Times!
