 Do you rotate your Bb's?
Author: Koo Young Chung
Date:   2007-02-14 14:59

This is a question for someone who has more than one Bb clarinets.

Do you rotate what you have or just stick to your most favorite Bb
(mainly for your practice)?

If you do,what makes?

I rotate my R13,Eaton(int'l) and in lesser degree LL,Series10.

Yes, I rotate them. I mainly do it, though, to make sure they work and aren't dying on me. But yes I rotate them. Plus, it depends on the situation. If I am playing outdoors, or somewhere that something could happen to my clarinet, I use my Selmer. But, for the concerts and recitals, I pull out my good old( it isn't that old) Leblanc.

I generally use my Series 9 full Boehm for orchestras and concert bands, my LL full Boehm for big band and pit work and my plastic Yamaha for outdoor concerts.

But I do like to play both my Series 9 and LL clarinets for solo work and chamber groups depending on how I feel. Added to that is my Yamaha Oehler (YCL-647) which I'll be making more use of soon.

Yes, I rotate my instruments to keep the pads in shape and to change things up a bit. It depends upon the gig and my mood as to which clarinet I play.

I have three Bb clarinets. R13, R13 Prestige and Eaton. I play only my Eaton in concerts, rehearsals, recordings, etc. I play mostly the Eaton in practice also. The only times I play one of the others is sometimes for practice, but only when one of them is for some reason assembled when the Eaton is not. If none of them is assembled then I might play one of the Buffets if it is in its case and close to me and the Eaton is in the double case with the bass clarinet (i.e. easier and faster to get the Buffet assembled). In that case I would probably use a different mouthpiece than my main one, either the mouthpiece that is in the Buffet case (if there is one) or one that is close.

Rotation is a great thing. The more clarinets, the less direct wear on the "primary" axe. Doing more practice on the "A" also helps since the actual playing time is lower for that horn.

Yes to Paul,
More practice on the A preserves the Bb longer! I have a set that's 20 years old, and it is time to get a new Bb, but the A is still kickin', and I have increased my practice time on that horn over the last couple of years as I put off buying the new Bb. But, I'm finally ready to take the plunge. :-)

Yes. I keep a Bb in each of my sax cases (A & T) and double case (A & Bb). I also have a second R13A that I occassionally use in place of my Concerto A. I frequently switch my Bbs around just for fun--but also for the practicality of keeping them all in working condition. So, that is a set of R13s (A & Bb), a set of Concertos (A & Bb) and a third R13 Bb (24k gold plated) that I "juggle", mix/match, whenever I feel like it. Keeps me playing the clarinet rather than the clarinet playing me.

I also play on three different mpcs, each with its own set of reeds. Works for me.........

GBK should be fully qualified to answer this question as he seems to have more clarinets than any one person could own !!

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Although I practice only on the A clarinet, I play on a different set (A/Bb) each week during rehearsals.

After a few months, I start the rotation all over again.

Since our orchestra plays in a few different locations during the year, for each concert I choose the set which has sounded the best during rehearsals...GBK

Where in the world do you get the money to own R13,R13 prestige and Eaton Bb clarinets? valued maybe for about 12000$ or more ? If I had that much money I would rather buy me a Bass down to low C. I only have a 12 years old R13 prestige Bb to use when my 2 year old Bb Festival needs to get repaired(only the arrrgggg left pincky nylon pin on the extra eb key has broke 2 times).

The real total value of these three clarinets is about $7,500. Maybe today it increased so much to $12,000 but that is not what I paid for them. I do have a bass to low C and it was nowhere close to this amount of money. Very close to half of that actually. I think others on the forum have a lot more clarinets than me and togetehr a lot more expensive too.....

Where to get the money? Simple choice of what to spend money on.

I'll probably have one less Bb when I sell my R13, after I can finally get rid of that silly sentimental value.....

I have 3 Bass Clarinets and I use the one the fits the music we're playing. It's keep things interesting. They all get played since I use them to teach at school, but they are "rotated" I suppose.

Yeah, but make sure you don't mix crossply tyres with radials.

Is that like putting a Buffet barrel on a Selmer, or worse still - a Buffet top joint on a Selmer with disastrous results?

I would hope one would keep instruments within a reasonable likeness, or else things like intonation, response, "feel", etc, might get out of control. Additionally, I would venture to guess race car drivers are most likely to use a certain brand of tire (although i am not at all certain of this), for many of the same reasons we prefer to stay with a preferred brand of instruments.

I mostly play my year old R13 Vintage changing off every few days to my antique (circa 1947) Penzel Mueller, which has a limpid and dare I say it lovely! tone.

The light weight of the Penzel Mueller always surprises me, to say nothing of it's pure tone. It was stored for almost 50 years in a friends's garage. Maybe it got aged in the carbon monoxide!?

I'm thinking of getting a Yamaha, hamiton keys and all...then I'll have a 3 pak to rotate!

yes I rotate it. but only along its long axis.
rotation along anthe short axis (also know as the 'axis of evil") makes it play too dark.
