Just wanted to say how happy I am today. Eddie Daniels is here in Stockholm, rehearsing for his concert with The Blue House Jazz Orchestra tomorrow. One of my teachers in school plays trumpet in this band, and arranged for me to come and listen to their rehearsal today. It was absolutely incredible! And his personality is just as great as his playing the clarinet. I was there for 5 hours, and got to talk a lot with Eddie Daniels himself. I also received a free ticket to the show tomorrow

darn you =)
Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. they are but improved means to an unimproved end, an end which was already but too easy to arrive as railroads lead to Boston to New York

My lovely wife and I had dinner at an ICS meeting in Virginia back in the 1980's. It was held at the old Harrrison family plantation on the James River, and the crowd at our table included John Denman, Eddie and Leon Russianoff, along with a bassoon player from Israel who was pushing his metal on metal tone hole sealing system - the worst item to try and sell to a bunch of clarinet players that I ever saw.
The group was certainly an assorted one, and the food (roast pig) wasn't really suitable for all present (notably our Israeli friend). But, it was very tasty, and the conversation was spirited.
My verdict on the guy is that he is a "nice guy". Good enough in my books...

I saw Eddie Daniels at a concert in the late '90s at the University of Washington. It was one of the best concerts I've experienced. Highlights were him playing classical with the UW Concert band and then midway segwaying into a jazz interpretation with the jazz ryhthm section coming in.
Then he picked up his tenor sax and proceeded to blow me away with his playing on that.
To top it all off he played duets with the resident clarinet teacher who happened to be Bill Smith complete with his electronic effects.
He came across as a nice guy.
Another that I would put in the same category is Ken Peplowski, who I saw at the local Jazz club some years back, and then overheard him talking shop with someone at the bar. I remember him saying he used a Portnoy BP03 mouthpiece for jazz, which I subsequently went out and bought.
I also heard him in a radio interview, where I remember the interviewer asking him what jazz gigs he was doing in New York where he lived. He replied that actually he didn't play many jazz gigs at all, but mainly barmitsvahs!

"and the food (roast pig) wasn't really suitable for all present (notably our Israeli friend)."
Do you remember this specifically about him or just assume that about someone from Israel? Not everyone in Israel eat only that silly thing called kosher food.....
I saw Eddie Daniels live a couple of years ago. I never heard him live before that, and from the several CDs I heard from him (which are just ok) I didn't know what to expect. In the concert he was really excellent!

The fellow from Israel was a practicing Jew to the extent that he was wearing the yarmuke cap while he was there.
However, I recall him putting succulent roast pig away with the best of us. Macht's nicht to me one way or the other, since there was not shortage of meat in any event.
One other thing: there were hordes of big black biting flies there as well. Very distracting to have to deal with when trying to eat or to listen to the post-meal concert.
