If anyone is looking for a good classical album. You should put the Minnesota Orchestra's recording of any of the Beethoven Symphonies at the top of your purchase list. I recently attended a concert with Beethoven's 5th on the program, and it was THE BEST Beethoven I have ever heard. Recording or live. Make sure the album you get is of the Minnesota Orchestra with Osmo Vanska conducting. Otherwise you are wasting your money!
Oh yeah, and the principal clarinetist in the orchestra is Burt Hara. I would rate him as one of the top 5 or 10 clarinetists in the world. But you can't find recordings of his playing because he does not think he is good enough to record...so humble...
Anyway, hope you enjoy the CD!!!

The Minnesota recording of Glazuov's The Seasons and Scenes de Ballet under Edo de Waart also features some outstanding playing from Burt Hara. I have the CD and also heard it on the radio just the other day.

I'm not so keen on their flautists playing - waaaaaaaay too much vibrato, even on staccato notes!
If I was to go for Beethoven recordings, I'd personally go for Berlin Phil/Karajan.

Isn't Osmo Vanska a world class clarinet player too?
I seem to have heard him play the crusell quartets on some finnish label (BIS)...

I can find one with the Argento piece and von Stade, soprano, but no other solo cds.

I too agree that the Minnesota recordings of Beethoven are very good. After having listened to numerous versions of the symphonies, I always appreciate recordings that go "where no recording has gone before." I think the MO provides that.
NB. I wish Hara would record some of the major clarinet concerti. He is an amazing performer.

Having the good fortune to live in Minneapolis, I rarely go to orchestra concerts. Phooey on me!
I have heard Burt play the Nielsen twice. Once a year or 2 ago, once about 10-12 years ago (or more!).
Both performances were spectacular; the more recent was much more polished however, and more confident as well. He is amazing! And he's a really nice guy. He remembered me this last time from our only previous meeting in 1990 when I auditioned for him at the U of MN.

Having the opportunity to learn from Burt Hara is an honor as well.
He is a very humble person, but I wouldn't put him as low as the top 5 or 10. After Gigliotti passed on, he filled his shoes as #1. He is the only one that could fill Gilgliotti's shoes. The Orchestra in Philadelphia was sad to see him go. We are lucky he wants to be back here in MN.
Morales is a great player, don't get me wrong-he just isn't Bonade in style or sound. So you can say I'm biased.

I agree with you 100%. I just wasn't sure how bold to be. I had the opportunity to take a private lesson with him last summer, and he is truly amazing. I also studied with one of his graduate students from the U of Minnesota. The next best thing.
Any word on recordings? I also agree with RodRubber that the MO is one of the premier orchestras in America. The main difference that I have noticed, between recordings of other popular and famous orchestras is the unity of sound. In orchestras that employ lots of solo players, sometimes egos can get in the way of a unified sound. And in the Beethoven recordings of the MO, the string sound is complete. Everyone melds into one sound, and I find it very pleasing to listen to.
Plus, Osmo Vanska is amazing.

If you got to the MO's website, they have a media library of recording excerpts. Certainly worth listening to some. Some are older, but many quite recent. Many of these have Burt's playing as well.

Osmo Vanska is indeed a clarinetist. He played professionally in Finland before embarking on his conducting career and he occassionally still plays in Minneapolis on Sommerfest concerts and such.
