I have a new Vintage Buffet Bb and the double case it comes with is meant to store the bell attatched to the lower joint. That does not sound right to me. I think the bell should be removed after playing. Am I wrong? Do any of you store your clarinet with the bell attatched to the lower joint? If so, have you seen any negative effects from this?

Hello,
I store my clarinets in a Buffet Double case that makes you keep the bells on. If you look closely you will notice that there is extra room so that the bells can be pull partly off the instrument and still fit in the case. I find that if you do this there really is not negative affect. I have not notice any difference. The cork is still fine on my A and Bb clarinets

pulling the bell off is the best but if you pull it half way it is still fine. The main point is to move it every day or else the bell will become 'glued' to the bottom joint.

I have acquired many clarinets dating from the 20s and 30s, in their original old-style cases, with the bells attached to the lower jointss (and often the barrels attached to the upper joint) -- I've managed to get them apart without much trouble at least 95% of the time. Make of that what you will...............

But always remove the bells after playing to dry out any water in the bell socket (with a piece of kitchen towel and NOT the same pullthrough used for drying the bore), and grease the corks before putting the bells (partly) back on before putting them in their case.
My Selmer single case means the barrel remains on the top joint while in the case, not an ideal thing, but I do make sure the sockets are dry and the cork is greased before storing it, and my Yamaha Oehler's case is one where the bell remains on - and I do the same thing there.
Considering the size of Buffet (and some Selmer) double cases, I can't see why they don't rearrange the inside so all the sections have their own seperate slots.
If you've worked on a clarinet where the bells have been left on continuously (where the player has never removed them at all) then you'll find the bell gets stuck, but once freed the bells are loose after applying cork grease, and the tenon corks will usually come off easily as water has got in underneath them, not to mention mineral deposits encrusting the lowest part of the socket and on the tenon tip.

If you wipe the sockets out with your pullthrough, you're going to get cork grease on it. And everytime you use it in the bore, the grease from the sockets will not only coat the bore, but also build up in the toneholes along with dust and other debris from the case and fibres from the pullthrough itself.
I use a piece of Bounty kitchen roll for drying the sockets and tenons with as it's tough, and that's after using the pullthrough on the whole instrument (while still assembled) going from bell to barrel a few times to remove the condensation from the bore. Then I dry the sockets and tenons with a piece of Bounty which can be changed when it's getting tired looking.
This was discussed on here a while back, but it's worth reitterating as it's in our (and our clarinet's) best interest.
Maintainance is an important part of being a clarinet player.

That makes a lot of sense and is something I have never though of....however, I have been cleaning my clarinets for 50 yrs--wiping the sockets with the swab--and gunk build-up has never been a problem in my bore or tone holes. I do either launder my silks or replace them periodically and perhaps that is what has saved my clarinets. Nevertheless, thanks for bringing this up (again)--guess I missed it the first time around.

I carry a really disreputable-looking scrap of paper towel in my Buffet bells-on case just for wiping the sockets.

I just fold my bit of kitchen paper up differently each time so I can get as much of use from it as possible, and so it doesn't look too skanky from the wood stain.
Maybe using white (Yamaha) pullthroughs isn't a good idea as they do discolour easily (I did like the burgundy Buffet ones as wood stain didn't tend to show up too much), though it's a good indication when to bung them in the wash.
Though grenadilla stain is hard to shift at 40°.
