Hello, I have a question to all of you who have been to or know alot about Interlochen SUmmer camp...First off, I am a senior in high school and I have made Texas All State 2 times (although I seriously doubt I should have made it...) anywho, I will be attending the camp this summer (in like 2 days ) and I was wondering how well I should fare in the audition?? I am a very worrysome person and I DO NOT want to be last chair!!! (although I would be ok with it I guess) also, can someone tell me if when we get in there do they choose the major and minor scales separately for each person? or do they just choose same for everyone...reason I'm wondering is cause I am very shaky on my minor scales (just started learning them!) so this information is most important to me! let me know
thanks
:)

I was also a two year Texas All-Stater when I went to Interlochen. I did fine, taking seventh chair on my audition. However, that chair only counts for the first week - there are chair tests every week, so don't worry too much. The first round of challenges are before the first concerts, so even the initial chairs don't mean much.
I don't remember much about the scales and what I had to play. It was several years ago. If you are a regular Texas All-Stater, you'll do fine. If you are a small-school all-stater, you'll probably be at the bottom, sorry to say.
Have fun wearing those knickers!

I'm sorry that Mark (my son, the Interlochen veteran) isn't here to answer the question about the scales and I certainly don't remember the answer. But if I can give you some advice, here it is. Don't think about your chair. Before the audition, practice effectively. On the day of your audition, take it easy. During the audition, focus on trying to make everyone like the music as much as you do. Then have a great time playing the music no matter what chair you are sitting in. E-mail me privately (gdubac@home.com)and I'll find out about the scales from one of the other clarinet kids who will be there.

Don't worry about what chair you get. Just try to absorb and learn everything you can while you are there. If you don't do well, just use what you learn to get ready for next summer.

And be sure to make lots of friends! The members of your section will also decide who wins and loses the challenges. I know a wonderful player who got ripped off every week at challenges. He made too many enemies. You can't afford to do that in the music world. You have to get along with your colleagues.

Jessica, you are right. Everyone has to get along. They SHOULD get along. But, isn't it SAD when everyone has to live a lie. Honesty is always the best policy and the lack of it is degrading to Interlochen, or any other place for that matter. I sincerely hope anybody who is "listening" will re-think such action.

I started a long thread about competition in general and challenges at Interlochen in particular a while back. I'm still of the opinion that too much competition too early for some young musicians is not a good thing. That being said, there's everyday real life, and then there's Interlochen. It's a life changing place. Don't worry about auditions, chairs, section people who may not like you....knickers, food on trays....totally immerse yourself, and get ready for the time of your life!!!
