Not sure if this is entirely a tonguing issue but... I have a young student 11yrs.
old who is having problems with making excess "glottal" type sounds when
producing a sound. Almost like a stoppage of sound. I've tried various long tone
exercises with him, any other suggestions or ideas to what may be the cause?

hes probably stopping the air - and not using his tounge - starting and stopping the air stream to articulate.
query him -make sure he is touching the reed with his tounge
common issue with young students - you need to keep reminding them to use their tounge and not the air stream to separate the notes
have him play 4 G's - very slow - explaining how he should be using the tounge then 4 F's ,4 E's, slowly. build up speed with a metronome.
stop and correct him every time he reverts to using his throat and not his tounge to separate the notes

I have, on a few occaisions, shown students the concept of stopping the tone with the tongue and not the air by running water in a sink. If you pass your finger through the water between the faucet and the sink, there will be a moment when the water does not hit the sink but obviously, the flow of water was never stopped. I explain to the student that the water is like there air, it doesn't stop, but the tongue is like your finger, momentarily stopping the flow. This demonstration has worked for me if you want to try it, good luck.

have you ever tried using a straw? you can feel the tongue stop the air a lot easier than with the clarinet. This is just a suggestion to get him aware of using his tongue, not the back of his throat.

I have a student who had a similar problem and I always tell him to blow forward...not squeeze the air out. It works for him. Works great actually.
