Hi,
Has anyone here heard of belcanta or belecanta.
I saw an advertisment for a belcanta bass clarinet. it was german system.
I believe they are made by amati for germany and astria.
I would like more info if anyone has any.
Thanks.

I think they may mean "Bel Canto" - a phrase used for a certain style of singing.
Bel canto is an Italian vocal technique beaty of sound and brilliance of performance rather than dramatic expression or romantic emotion. The style was popular during the 17th century and the proper style for Italian opera and Mozart. (paraphrased and abridged from my copy of the Harvard Dictionary of Music)

Belkanta is a brandname for Bass clarinets, scholarmodel, with german system till low E-flat. For a german system bass clarinet this brand is very cheap (6750 DM)
I don't know the exact factory and do not have experience with this type.
See for instance http://www.netzmarkt.de/thomann

Hello,
the belcanta clarinets (two types of Oehler Bb clarinet, low Eb and low C bass clarinet, german fingering) are available in Germany by <a href=http://www.leopold-mueller.de/>Leopold Müller</a> (when not ordered in a music store). This company is known as an import company for music instruments from the czech republic. Below their homepage under <a href=http://www.leopold-mueller.de/news.idc>news</a> you can find a PDF-brouchure of it, the prices and a brief technical information is listet at <a href=http://www.leopold-mueller.de/scripts/lm_struct.asp?t=3&v=31>'belcanta'</a> below <a href=http://www.leopold-mueller.de/produkte.html>Produkte</a>.
The bass clarinets have two separate register key, no automatic ones. The bore size is 'the large boehm bore size', not 'the typical german narrow bore size for bass clarinets'.
A few years ago I head from a repairsman: "great instruments, especially in sound, but nearly all the pads have to be re-seated and the mechanism re-adjusted when you get a brand new one."
I'm sure, <a href=http://www.karlsruhe.de/Kultur/Musikhochschule/b-meyer.htm>Wolfgang Meyer</a> plays a bass clarinet 're-adjusted' by this repairsman.
I hope, this information helps a lot,
Arnold (the basset hornist)
