 Interesting Observation
Author: Questionaire2 (Q2)

I've noticed that some messages posted on this BBoard get deleted. This one's to Mark: Do you have final say on anything that is posted? Can you delete a post if you don't like it? Are you the only one, or are there others?

P.S Please don't delete my message.

Just me. I rarely delete messages - I don't delete music-related message I disagree with, just messages that are either off-color or off-topic - and I generally grant wide latitude to the off-topic.

P.S. - I find that mildly insulting. If you'd care to check the history of the BBoard you'll find very few deleted messages.

Mark, I agree. Your monitoring of BBoard contents is excellent, I might have chopped off a few more, but not the wild humor we sometimes get off into. {I was told that a preposition is a poor thing to end a sentence WITH!] Don

Mark's monitoring of this (his) Bulletin Board has been excellent. In the three years I've followed the posts, I've never seen a deletion other than the type Mark stated. You should also understand that this is Mark's Board. He built it and maintains it. If he ever decided he no longer wanted to maintain the Board, that would be the end of it!

Mark, I just want to join the same choir as Don and Ray. This is an exelent page. The few messages that I've seen before they were deleted shouldn't have been posted to this page anyway. This is a perfect phorum for a free exchange of opinions and information on a very specialized topic. Let's keep it like that.

I think that Mark's sensible (and minimal) monitoring has a lot to do with the high quality of this site and I'm grateful he's willing to take the time to maintain the BB so well.

After surfing just about every site on the net pretaining to music and musical instruments, I think I can safely say there is no other site as good and as well maintained as this one. Please keep doing what you're doing Mark!

Ditto to all the above. I dont care about the XXXXX files or any other subject. There are thousands of other B boards if I want to discuss another subject.
To MARK-------> keep up the good work and thank you.

Do the Math, Practice, THEN Whine!
Author: paul
Date:   2000-06-14 19:59

Whiners and complainers that would rather talk about something other than music on the clarinet need to take their empty complaints somewhere else. You bet I have an attitude. Let me tell you why.

Here is a mere glimpse of the hard work lots of folks put into this BBS because they care about music on the clarinet. Only Mark C. and a precious few other BBS folks know the work I put into the Scales files, just to help novice clarinet players - and all for FREE. If Mark C. collapses this BBS, 60 sets of two octave Scales fingerings and related strategies will get flushed. Do the math. That's 60 Scales by two octaves, ascending and descending, 8 notes per octave in each direction, each Scale checked/rechecked, each fingering checked/rechecked, then custom sized from original format by exactly 27% to fit 8.5" by 11" (US standard) sized paper. Anyone care to tell me how many fingerings I made for these files? Anyone (other than Mark C.) care to guess how many hours of time it took me to make the files and format them? (Hint, much more time formatting than content development - in line with computer programming timelines).

By the way, if folks don't think the Scales files have any value, go to the page and tell me the "hit count" at the bottom of the page. If you want to whine about something, zip me a posting about having to practice those dumb, boring scales day after day. Then, I'll be more than happy to listen to you and encourage you to keep on going.

I am glad of the monitoring done by Mark. I know many see any censorship as evil, in a black and white way. However, unmoderated boards can get so full of swearing and trolls as to be unbearable and useless. I've seen it happen. Mark has shown excellent judgement in his moderation, or shall we say great moderation in his moderation? Its an outstanding board because of his efforts to keep it on topic and polite.

Sorry, I didn't know this was all mark's doing, and I didn't mean to be insulting - sorry. I agree with everyone from what I've seen so far - this is an excellent BBoard - one of the best for sure. I must confess though ('cause I'm new), I don't have a clue what Paul is going on about scales for! Can someone enlighten me?

Thank you. I'm probably a bit "over sensitive" since I really try to keep things relatively on track, and that takes a lot of time - and patience, something I've never been accused of having :^)

There was only one time that I actually banned an entire domain from posting for a couple of weeks (ad hominen attacks on a band director that wasn't on the BBoard to defend him/herself - I can't remember which).

 Response for Q2: Scales Files
Author: paul

If you want to see what I specifically am talking about, look in the Study section of this BBS, then open up the Scales reference. There you will see 60 Scales - what I believe is the fundamental core of music on the clarinet.

If you take the time to understand the concepts in these files and you practice until you play the Scales well, then you will have earned one of the critical skill sets for playing the clarinet. Some of the concepts include:

1) Understanding key signatures (you know, all those fancy flats or sharps),

2) Fingering strategies to help you run through the notes in each Scale smoothly by instinctive reaction instead of forced thought (because you won't have time to think about fingerings as you play music), and

3) Just for fun, you can see how complex jazz music can be with the modes (Scales starting at different notes along the primary Scale).

These files are not meant to compete with published works (Rubank, Albert, Baermann III, Klose', etc.). Rather, they were specifically designed to help raw beginners gain understanding and expertise with this set of skills.

Don't worry Mark, I know that feeling. As for paul, I think what he is doing is excellent, although --- no I can't say it. Wow, there are so many emotions on this board it's unbelievable! - Now I'm afraid to say something in fear of hurting someone. I never knew that internet text could bring out so many emotions in people.
Question time. (What I do best)
To Paul:
Why take the time to bother doing all of this work? What must you get out of it? Why not refer clarinettists to Baermann or something, to improve their scales, and just have a few tips.
--- I'm not being insulting, just full of questions -----

Q2:

Usually, people have to possess some information about a subject before they can ask questions. Music on the clarinet is no different. Let me give you a common example to illustrate the problem.

I'd bet that the vast majority of clarinet players "out there" are raw beginners or worse. There are plenty of folks who are totally clueless, buying musical instruments for their kid at the nearest department store, fetching what looks like an adequate book or two and then telling their kid "good luck". This is the formula for disaster. Been there, done that as the kid in this scenario 20+ years ago. I really didn't know what I was doing and for me making music was a mystical arcane art that was simply out of my reach.

Fast forward into the Internet age. Lots of kids have access to the Internet today. If it's not at home, it's available at a library or a school. These raw beginners could use a little help every now and then. I wish I had it a while ago. Anyway, recommending a good book is great and it should be done. If the kids can convince their parents to buy it for them, great. Go for it. However, the good books are sometimes hard to find, sometimes out of stock, and often not the highest priority for the parents on their ever expanding list of things to do. Recently, I had a hard time fetching good drill books because they were out of print and not available on local music retailers' shelves. I also discovered that a lot of teachers don't teach Scales. Yet, if a kid (or a novice of any age) has a grasp of this fundamental skill, the art of making music is no longer black magic. So, why not kill two birds with one stone? Help the raw beginner with a fundamental skill and make it easy to fetch.

Yeah, I busted my - - - to make these files from scratch, and I have an ego (couldn't tell, could you??? ;) ). However, that's not important. I believe I am meeting a market need in a way that no one else saw before. Now, all the raw beginner has to do is follow the fingering diagrams to play the Scales. What I get out of this is the feeling that well over 90% of the clarinetists "out there" who are typically raw beginners now have a source of totally free information about a fundamental skill for music in general and specifically for the clarinet. Sure, the content in each file looks a bit primitive and it could look a whole lot better. However, it's always available, easy to fetch, easy to print on almost any printer, and most of all, the price is right. Stealing a line from Gershwin, "Who could ask for anything more?".

Paul's scales file is another good example of why Mark's light editing on the b-board makes the whole site so useful. The family-friendly policy means I can recommend the scales file or anything else on klarinet to a parent of a young beginner, without worrying that the parents will come screaming back to me with complaints that I sent the l'il darlin' to a spam farm or to some den of iniquity. I like the diversity here.

If this is family, then 'I'm sorry Mother that I misbehaved', sounds just about right. Ego aside, well said Paul about the scale files, I now know a little more about them than I did before.

Thanks for the chuckle - the spam and den of iniquity - I never quite thought of finding that here.
