 Davie Cane Company
Author: Suriyakham

Hi There
On December 5th I wrote to Davie Cane and ask to trade my 20 boxes of FOF # 3 1/2 with # 4. I got an email back the next day said that I can send the reeds to them through the address in Las Vegas I mailed my reeds on December 14th with delivery confirmation. Around Jan 8th 2007, I still have heard or received any reeds from them. I have been written many emails to them in the last 4 weeks, but no reply. I am a clarinetist with the US Coast Guard Band. The 20 boxes of reeds I sent to Davie Cane are property of US Military (The Band pay for the reeds). I really don't want this to become a bigger problem because The reeds are the property of the US Military. I Just wrote Davie Cane yesterday and tell them to reply to my email or send my reeds back. If I haven't heard from them by Monday Feb 12, The US Coast Guard will file a law suit using military lawyer againt Phil Shapiro and Davie Cane Company.

[ The Coast Guard MAY file a lawsuit - I'm sure you can't speak for the Coast Guard because your rank doesn't start with "Commandant" - but most probably wouldn't for the amount of money involved. That doesn't excuse Phil or his successor(s) from not contacting you . Mark C, moderator ]

If anyone knows a personal information on How to contact Philip Shapiro (not by any Davie cane's emails or phone numbers), Please let me know?

I really want to fix this problem at the smaller level. I will wait until Feb 12, and then it will be fix in a more difficult level.

Is this really needed?

Just in case yours wasn't a rhetorical question, perhaps someone on this forum can share a way to raise Cane.

As a former Air Force member, I know military personnel are encouraged to resolve issues at the lowest level.

It is really not needed. That is why people do this kind of thing and just get away with it. They know that no one is going to do anything about it. What a great world we are living in.

So that's the answer. Mr. Shapiro had infact wanted to keep your boxes of reeds all along. Your scare tactic didn't work (and I'm sure the Coast Guard would not appreciate you using their name to do so), and so now Mr. Shapiro or his successor can keep the 20 boxes and profit unjustly.
Given the fact that you've posted two times (I gather I'm seeing those two posts as I type...) in the recent future, what sort of research have you done here and elsewhere about Davie Cane? I personally wouldn't be sending around someone else's property unless I was sure about what I was doing with it. If you have infact done the basic research before you sent the reeds, then you should know that Davie Cane has had a good service record and I can only think of one incidence recently where a delay in delivery was due to an issue other than low harvests of Gonzalez.
That being said, as long as you have reeds to play on now (you should since the military provides you with everything) I would try to see what actually happened to the reeds with a little more time.
To quote you with "What a great world we are living in."- I think the same can be said in response to your rash original post. You might not see it that way, but responses to problems like that one often quell any attempts businesspeople make to go out of their way for consumers. It's why some businesses wouldn't trade the boxes of reeds with you. I could go on...
Basically, sit tight and see what happens. I apologize on behalf of...I don't know...whatever is responsible for your reeds being a mystery right now. (Correction- the Coast Guard's reeds!!) In seriousness- it's never fun to have situations like this happen to you, whether or not I agree with how you dealt with it.

Bradley

Thanks for your comment Bradley. I used to be customer of Davie Cane for many years prior to joining the Coast Guard. I bought many many boxes of reeds from them. I have to tell you, it is the best service I have ever had. That is why I trust Davie Cane so much. But with no replying email since Dec 6th, what do you want me to think. At the least, I just want to hear from Davie cane and tell me what is going on. In every email I sent to Davie Cane, I always said If you do not have the reeds to mail to me right now, it is totally fine. I can wait until you have reeds to mail to me, but please reply to let me know what is going on. I also never know that they are going to be out of business and same as many people that posted on the BBoard between Dec to Jan. The web site still good and never mention anything about closing. Davie Cane never said anything in the Dec 6th email, just tell me to send the reeds to them. BBoard is how I find out about they being out of business what I need is just a reply, he can mail me the reeds in 6 months I don't care. I am also not using the Coast Guard name to scare him. I intend to talk to the legal office on base and see what they can do to help me. In this situation, one email will fix the problem.

Suriyakham.

Hi there
Gonzalez is a great company. I just got this today. I wrote an email to Gonzales in Argentina and explained the situation to them a few days ago (I just want to ask for personal contact information of Mr. Shapiro). Here is their reply (word by word):

Dear Mr. Suriyakham,

Many thanks for letting us know about this situation, and appologies for the delay in getting back to you. The factory has been closed for summer holidays and we've just returned to work.

To be honest, we have tried contacting him, writing and calling, but we have had no answers at all from his end in the last months when he moved the company out of Florida.

We're willing to help, please send any document or paperwork showing how was the transaction to be conducted. We'll send you the material. And we'll keep the paperwork as reference for settling this issue down in the future.

We look forward to hearing from you soon,
Kind regards,
Eduardo Davolos.

(Disclaimer - I sell Gonzalez reeds)
The Gonzalez family and staff are very kind and helpful and I am sure that they will make every effor to help you.

The distribution of Gonzalez reeds is now handled by Conn-Selmer and they seem to have an ample supply and quick distribution to their dealers of Gonzalez reeds. I have been very pleased with their service since they took over last Spring.

Phil has had some very complicated events happening in his life including the move to Las Vagas and his own set of supply problems from Argentina. He is closing or has closed Davie Cane and plans to sell the business. I am sure that there may be loose ends and communication problems but I feel confident that he will straighen up the problems before the sale. Phil is a very talented, sincere, and nice person (from my many years of knowing him).

I do not sell Gonzalez reeds, but I had heard of the same situation mentioned in the previous post. I tried to order reeds just before he moved his company, and after waiting what seemed like an unusually long time to receive them, I got an e-mail apologizing for the delay and informing me that the company would not be able to fill my order. I cried a little on the inside, but ah well. As far as I know the company is now closed.
