What to do with a junker...

A friend's girlfriend just gave me an old Bundy that had been lying around at their old hippy-style food co-op for a couple of years. "You play -- you might be able to use it," she said.

Now as you might suspect, this thing needs an overhaul and a barrel -- the lower ring of the barrel and the plastic beneath it has broken clean off. But remarkably, for a horn lacking a case and just left on a shelf, it is otherwise sound and the keys are unbent. (Perhaps this is a testimony to the durability of Bundys!)

What should I do with this junker? Is it worth paying for an overhaul and selling it in the fall? I know people have posted about donating horns -- but to whom and where?

BTW, this is a Bundy "577." Most Bundys I've ever seen do not have this number. What does it signify?

C.

Most of the Bundy's have a bore size of .590 inch. The one you have has a bore of .577 in. Selmer claims it offers a bit more resistance and better intonation!

Most of the Bundy's on EBay sell in the $100 range. So, you probably wouldn't want to put a lot of money in it.

Cheers,

Paul

Donation to a local music instrument store for underprivileged kids' use is a viable option, even for this horn. Just make a phone call or two to see which stores in your area take donation horns like this for rehab. It's okay if it's a beater of a horn and doesn't look pretty. As long as it can play, it still has some life in it.

Think of it this way. Your donation of a horn may not seem like very much, but if it points a kid toward music and away from drugs and gangs, it's worth it.

I suggest trying to restore it! It should not be difficult for a good repair-person to find a suitable barrel, and give an estimate of cost to put into playing shape. I do this sort of thing frequently to try to keep horns available to our kids at minimal cost [zero profit] and accept their thanks!! I dont think it's heresy! Don
