 One track mind
Author: Bob Gardner

I don't know if I have a one track mind or not; however i believe that this is a one track bb. Clarinet, music etc. I come here to learn and to listen to others advise and to ask questions about the horn.
hang in there Mark. This is your baby.

This BBS serves folks like me very well on a very focused topic of specific concern - music on the clarinet. Folks have thousands of generic BBS outlets for other information, but this is one of the few BBS sources that an adult novice like me can access specifically for the clarinet. This BBS cannot (and never will) replace hard work and focused practice (especially with the help of a pro tutor), but it is a wealth of good information for music and especially for the clarinet. Here are a few examples of where this BBS' very tight focus has helped me throughout the years on MY favorite subject (hint: it ain't the XFiles, folks):

Selection of instrument and why (student, intermediate, pro grades and why)
Mouthpiece selection (style, brand, and why)
Care and maintenance (of the person as well as the horn)
Drill books (separating the wheat from the chaff)
Reed selection (artificial versus natural cane, stiffness, etc.)
Much wider view of styles of music (you mean that there's life beyond drill books???)
Greater appreciation of music as an art form (it's a lot harder than I originally thought it was, ouch!)
Mentoring grade school kids from experience (been there, done that behind livestock on a hot summer day...)
Helping folks avoid expensive mistakes (everything's negotiable, so go for it)
Guiding fellow novices toward excellence (what I believe this BBS does very well)

Opinions, flames, kudos? Bring them on.

I've only been on this board for a short time but I agree wholeheartedly! There are plenty of dicussion boards on every topic imaginable on the www. This one is about clarinets and music. If people wish to discuss other topics, by all means, find a board on that topic.

To paul: What's kudos? Should it be something I'm familiar with?

A kudo is a compliment (US slang term). Typical plural with the letter "s" at the end of the word.

I was hoping to catch more highly emotionally charged negative feedback (otherwise known as an e-mail "flame"), but apparently it didn't happen. So, by default, folks are agreeing with my opinion that this BBS should be highly exclusive to the subject of the clarinet. Fine by me.

Dick Vigorous here. I'm borrowin' Lelia's brain for a minute an' makin' her type for me, 'cause I'm a rat and I ain't got my own computer. (Yeah, yeah, yeah, a dirty rat. What's it to ya?) Kudos, them's granola bars. Yummy yummy yummy when ya can get 'em. Good eatin' when ya listenin' to some human squealin' on a clarinet. I like a clarinet, especially when a beginner plays it. Lotsa squeeeeeaks, like my Aunt Chatterclaw, or maybe she's my sister or sumpin' -- I never can keep 'em straight. Yeah, I like clarinet a lot. Me and my relatives, we're yer best audience, ya know. Yer attics an' insdier yer walls make pretty good auditoriums.

Unlike a lot of online bulletin boards, this one is really focussed. That's what I think part of what makes it a really good one.

However it is non sequitur [it does not follow that] that a one-track discussion board has people who have one-track minds. Indeed it seems that many of us have interests outside of music.
