If you plan on visiting Europe this summer, you might like to know that the Museum of Ancient Instruments in Brussels reopened this weekend in a beautifully reburbished Art Deco department store called the Old England, just opposite from the Fine Arts Museum. It's one of the biggest collections in the world, and until now most of it has been kept hidden from sight in the reserve. Many of these treasures are now on public display.

Many years ago, when I was only a teenager, I visited a small museum of instruments in Brussels. It featured many instuments invented by Sax, the man who invented the saxophone. Most of these have never been heard of since, but they were fascinating. I assume that this new museum is a refurbishment of the museum I saw. If so, it is well worth the visit.

Correction. It is now called the Museum of Musical Instruments or MIM. With things like Fender guitars on display, it is not so ancient. But Phorum readers are likely to be interested in offerings of Sax and Albert. And yes, Eoin, it is the same museum.

TKS, B J, its good to know that there is anothe good Museum showing the cl's progress, now in the country where Sax, Albert and others worked for us!! Of course, not far away is the Deutsch Museum in Munich and the Bate in Oxford, both of which I would very much like to revisit, this time taking several mp's [as invited to do!!!]. Of course I could go to Vermillion, S D too! Don

Only an American could say that Munich and Oxford are not very far from Brussels! For us Europeans, they are in entirely different countries!

Sure - but they're still not very far apart! Euorpean countries are, in the most part, small by our standards.
BTW - Canada is much closer than Ohio is where I live :^)

Mark,
With respect, I think Eoin is right. We do have a different concept of distance over here. For several years, I have lived in Paris and worked in Brussels, and although the two cities are less than 200 miles apart -- close enough, surely, by American standards -- they seem like different worlds to me.

They are different, I know (I had to work in London and then Koln a couple of days later - completely different places, even though not far apart as miles/kilometers go).

don't forget the Paris Museum of Ancient Instruments,in La Vilette (19e), they have a great collection of aroun 600 ancient instruments, from the 1600's to actual instruments. there is an important woodwind collection and some stradivarius violins!

There is also a very nice museum with an extensive collection in Vienna... we visited there in March and they have several examples of clarinets. And in the same building is a arms an armour museum for those with spouses with other interests. Some instruments have recordings that you can listen to.
