I have a Series 10 that I purchased in '71 when my old Centered Tone was stolen, serial number U94XX. It is clearly marked "Series 10" but, according to the information on www.saxmaniax.com, the 10's were first introduced in '71 with the W5900 series, and the U Series doesn't include 9400's. Both the barrel and the bell have a "B" stamped under the Selmer logo. Any information would be appreciated.

There's always some overlap with Selmer clarinets - same with their saxes.
So you will find certain models which were made before and after their serial numbers suggest, though they will have the correct specifications of their type, and not those of their predecessors or successors.
I've heard some people argue that an early MkVI sax is an SBA because the serial numbers say it is, though the mechanics (and some other things) that clearly shows it's a MkVI.

Actually I got that 1971 year from Selmer themselves
http://www.henri-selmer.com/html/english/historique/histo/histo.htm
which, as Chris said, their serial numbers information seems to be like a good guess and nothing exact. They are known to have crossovers as they use up parts from previous models and they introduce new models.
If your clarinet says it's a Series 10 - then it's a series 10.

I have a Selmer Series 10, clearly marked as a Series 10. Serial number is U9726; the original owner bought it new in 1967. I am the second owner.

Ah ha! Okay, thanks for the replies; I was thinking that there might be some rational plan behind the sequential number series - wrong! Does the "B" on the bell and barrel denote anything or is that just thrown in for the purpose of further obfuscation?

I've never seen Selmers with 'B' stamped on the bells and barrels - only on certain clarinets where the bells and barrels are made specifically for A and Bb clarinets so they don't get used on the wrong one.
Unusual to see this on a Selmer as they generally used the same barrels and bells for both A and Bb clarinets.
Did you buy this one new or used? And is the 'B' stamped lighter than the logo?

I bought it "barely used" at Silver & Horland, NYC. The "B" is centered right below the "Series 10" and appears the same quality as the logo.

I remember now - there's a decorative 'B' on the barrel and bell. The 10G has this as well.
To be honest I never took much notice of it, or wondered about it's significance. And having never worked on any Series 10 or 10S A clarinets I can't say if they too have the 'B' on them or an 'A' instead.

I have a pair of late-model Series 9 and the A barrel is marked "A". I've seen many Selmer barrels marked B, I don't think I've seen another one marked A.
