 Charles Bay H3
Author: antonwebern
Date:   2007-01-08 09:42

hallo
i'm in the market for a new mouthpiece. Does anyone have any experience with the Bay H3? ??

as well...
While I will probably end up going through Mr. Bay (luckily we live in the same city), I noticed a 'deal' on wwbw for an open, long H3. Does anyone see any harm in ordering from wwbw and if its no good just sending it back? Would I, if I end up keeping the piece, be 'missing out' on anything (customa/personalization, etc...) by not going directly though Charles. Missing out on anything except paying 50 or 60 bucks more (and being forced into a ligature...)?

thanks thanks
jack

and I guess any general comments on the various Hs would be appreciated. And while I'm at it, would anyone recommend Walter Grabner's kaspar pieces over these Bays?
and I guess for reference, I'm moving from the cheap clark fobes with a CF+ facing...

Jack, I've used the Bay H1 and H2, but have no experience on the H3. However, I feel it is always a good thing to talk to the maker whenever it is possible to do so. If you live in the same city you could probably go by his studio and take your instrument and try some in person. That would be well worth the extra 50.00. And, if you don't want the ligature, just tell him you can't afford to get one right now. He works with musicians all the time and he knows we have a bit of a money crunch.

I have used H-1 Mo-L and H-2 M-M with Vandoren V-12 reeds and thought they were fairly reed friendly until I tried Walter Grabner AW-personal and AW1-personal with Gonzalez FOF reeds. For me I get about 9-10 playable reeds per box and about 5-6 are concert quality. They also last almost twice longer than the Vandoren reeds. I've tried FOF reeds on my Bays and also V-12 on my Grabners and it didn't work wery well. It's maybe because the Bays are long and medium facings but the Grabners are medium short and short facings. FOF reeds have slight shorter facing than V-12.

I also use a Grabner mouthpiece and use a Vandoren V-12 reed with it with excellent results.

Yikes!!!!! Again and again.....ad nausem. A mouthpiece is a mouthpiece--it's as simple as that. One size does not fit all nor will one make or model play the same for everyone--nor will two mpcs of the same model always consistantly play the same for the same player. And playing the same mpc as "what's his/her name" will not enable you to sound the same.

The only criteria for the quality of any mouthpiece is how it plays for you. And much of the time, it isn't really the mouthpiece as much as your effort spent in learning how to play it.

As for Charlies mpcs, I have two vintage Ithica's. One has a copy of my Chicago Kaspar's facing and the other a 033 model (whatever that means). And they play totally different. I also have an H2 which I selected after play testing about six others--and they all played differently.

My advice: Charlies mpcs are generally well made, but you have to find one that plays well for you. An H3 from eBay WILL NOT play like anyother H3 someone on this forum may use--do not order it without a return policy in place. And do not rule out the H2 models. Charlie models all of his mouthpieces after Kaspars--but even like original Kaspars, Charlies mouthpieces are not consistant. They are good, but you need to find "The One". As Brenda suggested, your best plan would be to go to Mr Bay yourself. He is great to work with and fun to be around as well. As for extras (ligs, etc)--be prepared to just say no. He's heard plenty of that from me.........

CXZ_K series mouthpieces by Grabner have longer facing than his Personal series. I can use V-12 reeds on the AW-personal but I don't get as good result as using them on Bay mouthpieces. But I find V-12 unplayable on the AW1-personal because the facing is too short.

William is correct about the variations of mouthpieces and individual players. Mr. Bay and Mr. Grabner along with Greg Smith and Brad Behn, Morrie Backun (as well as all the hand-finished makers) all finish their mouthpieces to individual specs. Therefore, if you are able to go in person to one of them you're more likely to get the absolutely best mouthpiece possible for you and your instrument and playing style. If you can't go in person, at least communicate via email or telephone before purchasing one of these. When you buy off eBay you get what another player was using or one that was made for retail sale through outlets like
Woodwind and Brasswind, Brook Mays, etc. Personal attention is the absolutely best way to get a good mouthpiece that works with your choice of reed.

William:

According to my 1970's Bay-Gale brochure, 033 is the Facing Length in 1/2 mm:
30, 31 Short
32, 33 34 Medium
35,36 Long

Tip Openings in 1/100 mm:
100-104 Medium Close
105-110 Medium
111-119 Medium Open
120-127 Open
128-135 Very Open
136-142 Extemely Open

M-M and MO-M (Medium or Medium Open Tip Opening and Medium Facing) were the most popular way back then.

When I was in high school (class of 1974), the clarinet players bought Bay MO-M or Portnoy BP02 as an alternative (but less popular).

YIKES---WILLIAM---AGAIN AND AGAIN... Ad Naseum. ...on this board: "One size does not fit all nor will one make or model play the same for everyone--nor will two mpcs of the same model always consistantly play the same for the same player. And playing the same mpc as "what's his/her name" will not enable you to sound the same. "

yeah ok thanks

I spoke with Mr. Bay and I am going to go to his house to check out what he has in store... he seemed quite excited about a duckbill model, so that sounds interesting.

he specifically told me not to bother with the H3s. Materials, longevity, sound, etc... no wonder it was on discount at woodhole brasshole

thanks ciao

Good luck as well. Charles is great and if you don't find "that" mpc right off, he will help you until you do. "Duckbill" ??? (that quakes me up, btw) Let us know about these. Didn't know Mr Bay was into Ralph Morgan style mpcs. Please say hello from me and tell him I am still using the Ithica custom mpc that he made for me in 1970.

(my apologies for the mpc "rant"--was feeling a bit crabby that am)

I had Mr. Bay send out some mouthpieces for me to try several years back and he included one of the duckbill models and told me he was personally playing one. So, it's not a new thing for him. However, I did not like it because I didn't feel the tone was dark enough and prefered the regular models.
