 wrong reeds?
Author: bill

Hi. I purchased five reeds the other day in a small music store. I asked the man at the counter to see some Vandoren #3 reeds, and he showed them to me. I looked at the fronts, and i picked the best five. When I got home, I fixed one up and started playing it. It seemed a little strange to me, and then I put it down to get another one. Then I noticed that the man gave me #2 instead of #3! I was furious, but i know it was only an honest mistake (or was it?). My friend/witness was with me and heard me ask for #3. Should I take her back with me to get the right reeds? thx ~bill

Bill,
What have you got to lose by asking? They should at least take back the 4 you haven't "fiddled" with yet, and if you're a steady customer I'll bet they take all of them back.

One of the reasons to utilize your local retailer if you're treated well and the prices are reasonable ...

I either buy totally sealed boxes or I get very anal about it and personally inspect each and every reed from an open box, from the front view, back view, and even through the heart of the reed using a bright light source (the afternoon sun through the store's clear pane glass windows).

Try talking with the store's staff. But, don't be surprised if they refuse to take the reeds back. My local high volume chain store documents each and every sale with a detailed receipt just for situations like this. Even then on certain expendable items, especially reeds, the return policy is to accept only completely sealed boxes back. It's partly a Health Code issue and partly a business decision to not restock hard to sell potentially used/abused products.

If the store sells one reed at a time and they gave you the wrong number then I'm sure they will give you the proper ones in exchange. No big deal--some one grabed the wrong item.

thanx 4 the advice, even though i haven't gotten around to taking them back yet. the guy who owns the place does not know too much about music, and frankly, he isn't that bright, so he'll probably take them back.

I disagree with all the comments that say take them back. If I found out the store I deal with is taking back unsealed boxes of reeds, I wouldn't buy from an unsealed box again.
You made the mistake by not checking the reeds yourself. Whenever I buy single reeds (which isn't often since I buy them by the box)I select them and look them over myself.

I agree with Ray. I'd be really surprised if the store takes back the reed you used. Maybe the other four, but this whole scenario should be a learning experience. IMO, you need to make sure of what you're buying before leaving the store.
