thanks a lot for answering so quckly...

My clarinet is a second hand modell from Austria but calm down ;-) it has the boehmsystem!
Almost everybody here in Germany told me to choose the Germen system (somebody truly told me that the boehmsystem is only used by exotics...) but I thought it can't be wrong to choose the system that's spread all over the world.

I promise to look for a teacher as quickly as possible but until then I'll try on my own.

If I ever get that far, I'd like to play jazz!!!

:-)))

Alexa:
Look for a song book called "the definitive Jazz collection" for clarinet. The songs are fairly easy to play (I can do most of them) it's a fun book. Sells for about $10.00 on this side of the world.
Enjoy.

If you think you'll like jazz, you'll love it. Jazz is my favorite thing to play on any instrument. I bought a Benny Goodman book, it's fun for me, but I've been playing for awhile. It can be pretty tough (gee, I wonder why). Another wonderful thing they have is Fake Books. I don't know how much they go for, but they're fun to mess around with. It's the kind of book street musicians use, so you know it will have popular songs.

Hello, Alexa!

I had some method books many years ago that had commentary notes (footnote-like explanations in the margins) in both English and German. I believe it was the Klose' series but am not certain now, maybe some others can help us out here ???

When I was in Germany, many many many years ago, most of the German musicians were playing German system horns. And, I'd like to add, quite well!

Since I play the Albert(German) system, we had a lot in common to discuss. But I agree with you that, because the Boehm is so global now, it's the better one to learn. It doesn't matter so much which you use however, it's the amount of practice and your musical development that will determine how well you do it. I think you have what it takes, a keen interest, desire to learn, to go a long way....

I agree with the above posts; lessons from a teacher or tips from someone you know who plays well would definitely help you get started with good practice habits. I in no way mean to imply that you shouldn't do anything with the instrument now. You'd be one in a million, anyway, if you didn't fool around with it. I find it amazing and a lot of fun finding all the different sounds you can make with a simple reed and a hollow tube. Don't you?

I'm sure I join others here who wish you much enjoyment over the years with your music.

Hi,

Just wanted to say that i taught myself at the begging aswell!!! and its good like that coz u learn from your own mistakes but i then got a teacher to help me progress.
Also the Jazz Fake books cost around £15-25 here in the UK if that helps in anyway!!! :-)
Good Luck!

That's if you only know you're making mistakes! There's an awful lot of youngsters out there with either bad or no tonguing technique because no one has instructed them in the basics.

Its better to learn the right way than to develope (or perfect as I did) bad habits. I took me a long time to get used to the right way as I had played incorrectly far too long. One of my favorite pieces is the Clarinet Polka that we played during Oktoberfest. Now that I've corrected (hand position, tunging, etc.) my bad habits, it's far easier to play now.

Your clarinet is called 'reformed Boehm system'. Its bore is smaller than ordinary Boehm clarinets.

Boehm clarinet players may envy German clarinets' darker tone but do not like their key system clumsiness.

I think you know a German music publisher 'Schott'. They issue execellent edicatotional series on Jazz. Jumping into playing jazz tunes may be a fun but it needs theory(Modes) first especially for improvisation, heart of jazz playing.

Following URL may be good to know jazz theory.

I can identify with the comments above.......

I started clarinet with class lessons in elementary school, and had some private lessons on bass clarinet in high school, and then tried to progress at my own rate for many years thereafter (very off and on and not much progress!). I started taking lessons several months ago and am amazed at the progress that I have made. I think the structure, discipline, and coaching from a knowledgeable teacher has made all the difference; and I wonder why I didn't do something like this many years ago.

Alexa,

Welches system Klarinette spielen Sie?
bis spaeter,
(Neugierig)ron b. (aus Kalifornien)
