 cl/bcl duets

Hi All

I had a question yesterday that finally tipped the scales for me (I had gotten this question about 20 times before and I finally decided to post something to refer people to -- not that I don't like answering email, because I do...but anyway...)

OK, so the question was about a recommendation for Clarinet/Bass Clarinet duets. Back in college I did some duo concerts with David Hattner, he on clarinet me on bass, where he went through the Bartok Mikrokosmos and chose a few to perform. Now, for those who've never taken beginner piano, Bartok wrote these two part etudes (literally two monophonic lines), much like the Bach two-part inventions. (Bartok also wrote 3-part studies, but this is where I left off my piano study! He may have written 12-part studies, but I decided to cut my losses).

Hattner and I performed the Bartok at Northwestern in 1989, and I found a recording of it, which I posted. It's on my blog: www.earspasm.com/blog. If cl/bcl duets are your thing, go have a listen. #3 is especially rocking!

Best
Mike

Great playing Mike!

Which volume of Mikrokosmos are these particular studies taken from?

Wow -- great playing? I was 17 and had lots to learn, but thanks for the compliment :)

You know, if Hattner is on the board, he should answer the question about where these were taken from. I really have no idea; all I have are the photocopies.

Hat -- you there?

Mike

Cool idea with the Bartok!

Another good Cl/bcl duet was written by Gunther Schuller. Micah Heilbrunn and Dennis Smylie played it couple years ago at the Aspen Festival.
