Another stupid question maybe? Well anyways, I understand the whole tip opening concept on mouthpieces and how it affects control and sound but what does the facing length have to do with it?

You can prob. get the best info/advice on this from facing/refacing experts in the MouthpieceWork@YahooGroups discussion site. My thot is that for the best playing, one's lower lip becomes placed at the point where the facing curve begins, thus determining the length of mouthpiece within the mouth. Others, please help. Don

the facing length affects resistance for a couple of reasons....
here's a simple way of looking at it..... (and very unscientific, plus i'm in a hurry here)
take a ruler and put it over the end of a table
twang it with you finger to get it vibrating....
then shorten the amount of ruler sticking out and try again
ok
- the most obvious thing is that the pitch is higher
- the same amount of finger pressure will make it vibrate faster because the energy is being absorbed in a smaller amount of mass....
- with less ruler sticking out, the bit sticking out will be stiffer just for mechanical reasons (relatively thicker for given length)
sorry i'm in such a rush- can't be more precise
but you can see that this hasn't really even scratched the surface and already we can see how less ruler sticking out behaves differently
now imagine the ruler is a reed
and the "vibrating length" is being adjusted by the length of lay
there is probably a thesis somewhere written about this
but this is all i can do in time allowed
i think this helps you START to understand the issues involved

....and then there's the matter of the contact length the ligature has with the reed since how the ruler vibrates is also a function of how much of it's length is held with one's hand. And why are some facings tapered at the heel end?
