Anyone out there with behind the keys experience with the 650? I'll be trying one out this weekend and any background info would be helpful.

Thanks

I have tried a few of these clarinets for students...

and have found my students really like them...the scale is very good and tone quite nice...

the low notes are quite easy to play...so I really think this is a good step up pro clarinet with super price as well...I also like the feel of the keywork ...Yamaha are making pretty nice clarinets these days...

My students like them alot... so go in with an open mind...

Best of LUCK!!!

A good intermediate ("step up") instrument, but not in the same category as, say, an R-13.

We happen to have both, among others, laying around our house (well, we brought them here -- they didn't come on their own). My husband bought the 650 for himself, because for some reason he was afraid to use my R-13.

One day after he had been playing the Yamaha for a while, he tried the R-13, and from then on, it was Katie-bar-the-door. If I wanted that R-13 back, I'd have to have it surgically removed from his hands.

So, the 650 is a good instrument, but you MIGHT consider looking at used R-13s in the same price range.

Many players cannot affored even an R13 so I consider the Yamaha 650 to be super deal...alot of professional doublers I know are using them and sound super.

Selmer also make intermediate clarinets..but not as well as Yamaha in my opinion.

Played the horn...great intonation. Regarding playability...it has a bit of resistance in getting the notes out compared with side-by-side ease of playing my Selmer Signet...action was very good though. Overall, I the Yamaha has great tone but playability is an issue with me. I'm off to play a buffet...

Resitance is simply a matter of maybe adapting the correct reed for the correct instrument....a bit of an apples and oranges scenario. The 650 is defiitely not a Selmer or an R13...that being said the mouthpiece or set up has to accomodate the instrument.

Appreciate the response. I figured that using the same mouthpeice and reed conficuration would eliminate one variable when comparing between instruments. Hmmm.

No two clarinets play totally alike..
