Is there anyone out there who can tell me what kind of clarinet Benny Goodman used? Was it a Selmer, Buffet, or what? And what model if known? Thanks.

Benny was a Selmer player. Atleast through the 30's, 40's and 50's. I seem to remember hearing from a person (don't think they were very reliable though) that he switched to Buffet's later, but all the pics up through the 60's show him with Selmers.

He was a Selmer player in the jazz playing, but he did use
a Buffet when he did the Copland concerto and in his recording of the Nielsen concerto. He was most often pictured with a Selmer clarinet, but I have some where he
is holding a Buffet, for whatever that is worth. There are
lots of pictures of players "holding" instruments they
didn't actually play.

Goodman also had a Conn clarinet that was presented to him. Big deal was the "S-K" octave mechanism or something like that. Conn only made about 12 of these horns for the union put a price on them that caused Conn to lose $52 on each one. I'm not certain if he ever used this model in concert. It was and still is a really fine horn, rather stuffy though. I think 4 or 5 of them ended up in the Lima, Ohio area. If you want more info, let me know.

Based on photographs and biographies I have read, I understand that in the earlier years, 30's 40's 50's 60's, he played on Selmers. However, he did switch to Buffets later in his life.

I have several pictures made of Goodman at the Selmer store in Toronto when he was on tour... early 50's and yes he played Selmer's then... and some publicity shots too... I'll place them on the web when I get them scanned.
