Hi Everyone:
I am planning to buy a Chadash barrel for my
R-13, just wonder how different will the new
barrel cause to the resistence, intonation
focus, and warmth of the R-13? i find somewhere
sell it for 180 CDN and no trial is allowed
how is their quality control?

thanks!

Jake

You can obtain one for 103 US$ through woodwind and brasswind(http://www.wwandbw.com/):their list price is 167 US$.

Ordinary R-13 has a bore size of 0.574".So,you can select from 65mm,66mm,and 67mm length Chadash barrels.I think you ought to find the present barrel length, although I doubt the same length of barrel will emit same pitchs.(There is e another Chadash "A" barrel. This is for smaller bore instrument. If your R-13 is Vintage, its bore is smaller than 0.574" and "A" barrel will be suitable).

I use a "A" Chadash barrel for my Selmer 10SII* and feel very good. Its grenadilla seems very good, and his quality seems very good since Mr.Chadash is still alive!(I think he is checking himself the shipping quality of each barrel). At this BBS I found there are opions to say Moennig is darker than Chadash.I do not know the tone of Moennig. However,My Chadash emits quite different tones from ordinary Selmer barrel. Its tone seem to include very many harmonics, not a single tone.

Please note. Each barrel can not necessarily matches each upper joint. So,good instrument people always recommend to find a good repair man to adjust exact joint matching.

By the way,you can read about Chadash barrel at this place(See sitemap).

Have fun!

Jake -

A hand-made barrel such as the Chadash will probably improve all the areas you mention.

Barrels are almost as sensitive as mouthpieces to tiny variations. No two play or tune the same. Unless you get a barrel from a mouthpiece maker who matches the two *on your clarinet* you should never buy a barrel without playing on it.

Most of the mail order places listed on Sneezy under "Equipment" will send you several barrels on your credit card and let you send back the ones you don't want. That's the way to go, even if you have to pay a little more.

Best regards.

I like very much the chadash Barrels. Interesting colourful warm centered sound. You must try a few to find the best combination Clarinet/mouthpiece/barrel/ligature.
