WQED Pittsburgh yesterday broadcast an Anton Reicha clarinet-string ensemble work. (Stamick Quartet did the string honors)
Vlastimil Mares of the Prague Phil (Symph) was listed as the clarinetist.
I did not have this information when I tuned it, so I had the fun of playing "guess the performer" before the announcer chimed in
I was blown-away. His sound has the darker hue of a
Germanic player...BUT there was a delicacy to it...'
I was certain it was NOT Brunner or Klocker, esp. in light of the following:
AND....(all seated, now) he used a faint spinning vibrato, reminiscent of Harold Wright, but even more subtle.
(edit added: This means that at first I was almost unaware of it, then it hit me. It imparts a little touch of verve. )
This dude is awesome. A google search revealed some CDs that were alas at full list price of 18USD and listed as special order.
I managed to find a slim bio, one picture (he is youngish) and that he is principal in the Prague. Otherwise, not much.
Worth a listen.

I have two CDs of his playing:
Mozart Concerto, Supraphon 11 0621-2911
Mozart Quintet and Krommer Quintet (orig. for flute), Supraphon 0017-2 131
I haven't listened to them for a while, but I remember being impressed.

i think i've got him playing Krommer concerti, a pink CD, but i can't find it- i remember liking the sound but thinking it was a lot brighter than i'd ever be able to get away with (and still be hired- but i'm mostly a section player not a principal)... i'll check through my CDs- i remember really lyrical playing
