 Where to find good recordings?
Author: C2thew

I'm looking for different recordings of a few pieces that i need to work on: i.e. finzi bagateles, weber concertino, and a few others. the only place i can think of is youtube. anywhere else?

Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. they are but improved means to an unimproved end, an end which was already but too easy to arrive as railroads lead to Boston to New York

A record store? Amazon?

You're in the L.A. area... make your way to Amoeba Music in Hollywood... great selection of new and used classical CDs. Sunset, just west of the 101.

Naxos is a favorite label of mine; a wide range of high quality recordings at a low price. You'll probably find these in a local shop near you. The cd:s are also available online. Check www.naxos.com (where you also can subscribe for a news letter).
Good luck!

My favorite place for recordings is Tower.com. Their search engine is the best I have come across for classical music and they have a huge selection. Another great source is Berkshire Record Outlet broinc.com. They sell overstock CDs and you will be amazed how cheap they are.

Someone reported on another thread (the one about the sale of the Classical radio station in DC) that Tower Music had closed their doors. That related to their brick & mortar store and not necessarily to the on-line store.

I used to love, when I was in the DC area, browsing through the huge room full of CDs in their classical music department. Now that the b&m facility is closing, I wonder if they will become a purely on-line operation, or will the whole Tower Records operation fold? Tower will surely be missed if that were to happen. Eu

Tower (at least the B&M) has been on a downward spiral for a few years now. Constantly diminishing classical offerings and storewide price hikes pretty much stopped my visits. Their "out of business blowout!" prices are about the same as other stores' regular prices, and they seemed to have increasing disregard toward customers.

It is a shame, though. About 5 years ago, the place was great.

Alex-
Yes, it's true, the retail stores are not so good. I was talking about their website, tower.com(.) They still have a great selection.

You might get a price on what you want from the suggested sites and then check out Amazon.

They are almost always cheaper! They usually have most anything.
