arundo donax - a nuisance and good biomass, too

Yesterday I heard a disturbing report on NPR about arundo donax, the plant from which our reeds are made. Some folks in Florida want to use it to create biomass for generation of power and others in California are trying to eradicate it as a nuisance weed.

It isn't as if this was new. Reed players have known about what a nuisance reeds can be for a long time and over time we have thrown great multitudes of these things into the garbage, creating biomass in a way.

NPR did report that at least one person, a sax player, wanted them to grow as much as they could, hoping the prices of his reeds would go down.

According to the environmental information, arundo donax is a terrible nuisance. It grows and spreads fast, crowds out everything else and is nearly impossible to get rid of.

Good for reed players, but bad for everything that lives in wetlands.

This is the case with many "imported" plants and animals (remember the rabbits in Australia?).

yes it is... who would have guessed that reeds are a source of DMT! I wonder what Vandoren does with all the roots & flowers?
