 Speller Checker
Author: Hank Lehrer
Date:   2006-11-30 18:03

Hi,

Recently, I thanked Mark C for the spell checker that he put on the BB. It is something I have always wanted. However, he emailed me back and said, there is no spell checker on the BB, it must be your browser.

OK, I'm a fairly adept software and computer user but can anyone help me under stand why I have this spell checker now? I have just gone to a new CPU but still use XP, Outlook, and Firefox. The spell checker resembles a Microsoft product as far as the layout. I have not looked into my custom dictionary but I suspect that there are words in it from me adding from this BB.

I'm sure some "expert" here has the answer.

Thanks in advance.

HRL

it looks just like the other ads and is called by a javascript. Cross-site scripting isn't supposed to happen here :-)

But the funny thing is, I thought I had configured the new CPU to be exactly the same as the fried unit that is being replaced. I never had the spell checker before.

The new version of Firefox has a spell checker built in. IE 7 may have one too, I haven't looked carefully at it yet.

I just switched to Firefox 2 at home, and it indeed does have spell checker built in.

Very useful.

Also with Firefox 2, I do not have to go crazy to get www.accuradio.com streams which are really great only seemed to work with IE. I have IE7 but the spell-checker did not work until I switched to FF2.

Another reason to switch to Firefox2.

Thanks all for the help.

Hi Terry,

I may have missed something here. What did you put and where? Do you work for Mozilla?

Another nice feature in Firefox (spell checker aside) is the IE Tab "extension" or "add-on" that allows one to open a Firefox tab with IE abilities. It's very useful for the occasional web page that Firefox will not render.

Once installed (Tools/Add-Ons, etc.) you right click on any bookmark and choose the "Open in IE Tab" option.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Something strange with my computer, some websites will work only with Firefox!

David,

in order to disable the seppl checker...

go to Tools/Options.../Advanced/General and uncheck the "check my spelling as I type" box

- or (alternate fingering) -

open an empty window/tab, navigate to "about:config" and set the "layout.spellcheckDefault" entry to 0.
