Author: pelo_ensortijado

i suspect that the hisses from my clarinet comes from my mpc and reed combination. i have tried to change emboshure for over a year but the problem just comes back.
any suggestions?
i just dont know. seems like i have tried everything.
the moment the reedstrenght get to weak it sounds great. but when the tone is good the hisses comes. and that is the c# and Eb on the left hand and the throat Bb.

HELP!!!

Since the hiss is confined to just a few notes, it could be that one of the pads that is lifted off its seat is torn.

I'd borrow a couple of mouthpieces and see if the hissing persistes.

i am using a 5RVlyre mpc and vandoren v12 reeds.
i think that on those notes there is allways a hiss. no matter what.
but with this setup and my way of playing it's just getting worse.
i changed to a selmer c85 120 and the hissing was as gone as it gets.
i just had that one around at home so...
the thing is that other clarinetists dont have this problem with this setup! or atleast the ones i have been talking to.
are there THAT big difference from person to person. cause im allmost shure that my emboushure is the same as theirs....

see if one of them will blow your instrument, and let you try theirs. that would tell you if it is you or the machine.

Your problem is seems simple, as you describe it. If the only notes are the low C#, Eb and throat Bb then you have only one problem. Assuming the following things- 1. your clarinet is in good repair, and 2. there is no dirt in the tone holes. then you only have one problem. The pads for those notes are too low; they need more clearance away from the body of the clarinet. If they are a bit higher than the problem should be reduced, but most people have this problem, it's not a big deal. As for Bb, there is not much you can do. Take off the key and be sure that the tube is clean inside, and you may need more clearance on that pad, too.

the clarinet is newly cleaned. and no, there's no dirt in the toneholes.
but why does the hiss gets alot worse just by using one kind of mpc/reed comb.???

The low C# to Eb hiss can be caused by reeds that are too hard for your mouthpiece and the way you play it. Since you have already tried a different mouthpiece, and it helped, try softer reeds. There is no rule that says you have to play a diving board to be a good clarinetist.

Another (remote) possibility is that your reeds are too narrow for your mouthpiece. Unless you are making your own reeds, or have a really unusual mouthpiece, that's not likely.

The fuzzy pinch Bb is typical of non Mazzeo/Stubens clarinets (that is virtually all clarinets). You will find a lot of discussion of the problem if you search through older posts.

hm. i'll think that the trashcan is the best place for this mpc!!!
i didn't like it from the start. but i had a very highranked clarinetdoctor when i was in north dakota on a summercamp i few years ago. her name was Nina Olsen. and she told me that "from now on i was going to use the 5RVlyre mpc!!" and so i did. and i was to stubborn to realize that it was no good to me and didn't fitted my body at all!!!
luckily i know that now. when i have tried some friends mpc's, and i am going to sellect a new one for me as soon as possible!!!

thanks for the help
