 getting "enriched" on classical music
Author: bawa

After the recurring comments on the demise of woodwinds/classical music etc. it was very interesting to read the following article in The Guardian yesterday

"Land of Hope and Glory"

http://music.guardian.co.uk/classical/story/0,,1955236,00.html

What do you think?

"bawa":

Have you read http://www.orfeondonostiarra.org/prensa/enero-2006-4.html

(For those whose Spanish is worse even than mine, this discusses how these developments in Venezuela have attracted the attention of the likes of Claudio Abbado.)

-----------

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Meanwhile, back in the USA:

I find the contrast pitiful. 82% of the NYC schools have a music teacher!

Thanks David. I hadn't come across that: the Orfeon is justly famous and has a lot of "crowd pull" here.

Elmo, totally agree. While I wish all the success to the programme and the fellows, it seems a narrow and limited approach whose aim is already to benefit just a few. I think the Venezuelan case seems to prove that in order for such a philosophy to succeed and actually produce something positive, you cannot do things by halves and have to really go for it in a big way.

Lets see if the Scottish effort gets similar results.
