 The Planets

Hi guys, just a quick question. When I played in the Planets a few years ago I recall the instrumentation was clarinet 1, 2, 3 and Bass. I am down to do the Planets again late December, and read that I am doing Eb clarinet. Is there another version with Eb in it? I'm confused. Thanks

When I did it it was 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Bass too. Strange.

Eb is used in the 3 new movements (Ceres, Pluto, and Eris). Holst used Eb because they are now considered to be dwarf planets. Of course, all this is subject to change when new disoveries are made...

Yep, I'm down to do Planets in Feb and am looking at all the books as I write. This version is Curwen 1980.

Clars 1 & 2.
Movements I-Bb, II-Bb, III-A, IV-Bb, V-Bb, VI-Bb, VII-A. (clar 1 playing bass flute cues if absent)

Clar 3.
All in Bb except for VII-A.

Bass Clar.
All bass ...no Eb.

So no Eefer in this version at all.

Just checking ...this is for Symphony orchestra and not a band transcript?

Might it be that you've been engaged to play Eb for another piece, same concert ? Just a thought.

Pluto was classed as a planet for 76 years, so yes, it used to be a planet. Pluto is still the same, it's just the definition that has changed. Pluto is now classed as a dwarf planet.

Pluto was never a part of the ''Planets Suite'' - I thought you'd get it.

Wasn't there a Pluto movement added by Colin Matthews to The Planets?

Now I feel silly. You're right, I didn't get it. Good one. :)
