During a typical rehearsal/performance do you have your stock barrel pulled out a little or is it usually left all the way in?

We've all played in cold recital halls, very warm auditoriums, air conditioning turned up too high, or not on at all.
All of the above affect the tuning...GBK

Your clarinet should be set up so that, when fully warmed up (by playing) and in a room at normal room temperature and humidity, the barrel is pulled out about 1/8" in order to tune properly at A-440 (or whatever pitch standard is used in your band/orchestra/whatever). This allows some margin for playing the clarinet in cold rooms or without sufficient warmup time. While it may be aesthetically displeasing to pull out the barrel sometimes, it's far better than playing flat with the barrel all the way in and no recourse.

Generally yes I do. In some circumstances I also pull out between the upper and lower joints and the bell. Depends on temp, how warmed up or tired you are, reed soft/stiffness, and your individual clarinet/reed/mouthpiece/barrel, etc.
If you get your open G in tune by pulling out the barrel but your lower clarion is sharp you can pull out the bell. If the notes around your upper/lower joints are sharp you can pull out there too.

If I can. Depends on the band I'm in and the mouthpiece and the weather. If it's hot and all the brass are sharp and I've got the flat mouthpiece on, then yes, push in to the end-stop. But then there's no-where to go - it's an uncomfortable place to be.
If someone's tuning to you, it's polite to pull out a bit. What if your instrument is a sharp instrument? How is anyone else ever going to reach your pitch?

So you are saying that when I buy a clarinet and mouthpiece that are tuned to A=440, I should actually expect them to be very significantly sharper than this, such that I need to pull out 1/8" (over 3mm) to get to A=440.
Always assuming normal temperatures, of course.
Is this what manufacturers aim for?
David, when you recondition an instrument, is this what you aim for?

Bruno: David had it right, if you are too flat pushed all the way in, then you can't raise the pitch by pushing in, unless you have shorter barrel at your disposal.

I pull my mouthpiece instead of the barrel. And I have a barrel that plays A=440 when cold so I can stay in tune as the clarinet warms by slightly pulling the mouthpiece about the width of a nickel. Pulling the mpc makes it easier when switching to the other clarinet--not so tight.

I am used to playing with an accordion tuned to A=443.5, and my 63mm barrel is in all the way.
For the first time since I got this instrument (17 years ago) I am in a community orchestra, and have been pulling my 65mm barrel out farther and farther, and pulling out in the middle as well, to get down to pitch. This unaccustomed activity has been an unaccustomed pleasure for me.
Barrel out 1/8" seems to be a good starting point.
