Hello
Someone asked me if I could find a replacement upper joint for an Artley Bb clarinet. He is trying to find the model but most likely he won't be able to. Is it possible to know what the model is from the serial number? Is it possible that upper joints from other Artleys will work regardless of model?
In general for most clarinet companies, is it possible to know what model the clarinet is from the serial number (especially a company like Buffet that make really a lot of different models)?
Thanks.

Here's a link for Artley serial numbers that will give the year of manufacture, at least:

The Music Trader web site has serial numbers for many other manufacturers, as well.
A larger question, though, is whether it's worthwhile to replace the top joint of an Artley. That's not a good clarinet. If the person who asked you the question needs a plastic clarinet for playing outdoors, then maybe he could find a better-quality, lightly-used instrument (Yamaha or Vito, for instance) for about the same price as replacing that upper joint. I see these for sale quite a lot, from kids who play the instrument for a week and quit--so often that prices stay low on these good but commonplace used student instruments.
