Hi,

I want to do a trio next year for Clarinet, Violin (or vla part arr. for violin) and piano. I want it to be high standard music, did Mozart, beethoven or brahms write for this ensemble?

Thanks

Of the big three composers you asked about, only Mozart has a trio, but with viola, the famous "Kegelstatt" K. 498.

You can easily search listings of chamber music for clarinet, violin, piano trios. I play in a trio with a violist/violinist, and am quite familiar with repertoire. Trios with violin are Bartok Contrasts, Khachaturian, Arutiunian, Milhaud, Rick Sowash, Hovahness, Ives, Schickele, as the most played and known pieces. You should look up the Verdehr Trio (verdehr.com) as they now have 17 recordings out of mostly contemporary pieces written for them. The Arutiunian, Hovahness, and Schickele were commisioned by them.

My recommendation for great pieces, listed in order of extremely difficult to playable is: Bartok, Arutiunian, Khachaturian, Schickele, and Milhaud.

With Violin : Milhaud Suite, it got me started in chamber music.
OK it's not a Kegelstadt (but that'swith Viola)

Katchaturian : beatifull !!
Constrast : difficult
Ives : well Ives ...

so I must agree with DaveF (but don't know Arutiunan and Schickele)

In Kegelstadtt (sp?), do you get a violin part that is arranged ferom viola part?

I'll have to listen to the Katchaturian.

The Kegelstatt is also in an arrangement for violin, viola & piano (the clarinet is replaced, not the viola).
