I'm not a dedicated heavy metal fan (especially when sung in falsetto), but if you accept Deep Purple then I'm in the boat (and I just add that many of them have a classical background, btw). Other oeuvres on the CD shelf include The Sex Pistols, Pink Floyd and ZZ Top, to name a few. They happily co-exist with Puccini, Bach and Phil Glass.
Too bad that clarinet is considered un-hip on stage, but with an Alto you could smash speaker towers just as well as with a Strat...and its proper use would stop certain people from singing... ![[tongue]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie6.gif)

I'm not a huge heavy metal fan, but I don't dislike it either. I tend to like grunge and stuff more. I have mentioned Apocalyptica a few times on this board. They are heavy metal cellos. I saw them in concert too. Quite amazing. My ex was a cellist and he loves them (and heavy metal music).

Edmund Welles is where it's at. I just saw the premiere of Cornelius Boots' new suite "Opium and Absinthe" at Old First Church in San Francisco. It's more of an atmospheric piece. Cornelius called it "trance-inducing." Very cool stuff.
Cornelius (the main composer/arranger/performer) is a very cool guy, I took some bass clarinet lessons with him last summer. Here was my assignment for one of the weeks:
Rose Etudes #1 and 4
Mozart Clarinet Concert, Mvt. 1
Bebop Scales and major triads around the circle of 5ths
The main melody to Miles Davis's "In a Silent Way" in all octaves.
That was an interesting lesson.
In other lessons, we learned riffs by the metal band Tool on bass clarinet and played through some of his new compositions for Edmund Welles.
Good stuff.

I like Led Zep and have done since very young, and wonder if my parent's copy of Led Zep II LP is rare - it has a black background to the gatefold sleeve instead of the usual brown/plum colour.
But I'm into more alternative rock, and can't stand the commercial stuff like bon jovi or guns'n'roses.

Cheers Ben - I couldn't help noticing you were also interested in the Amati full Boehm Eb clarinet on e**y (or *Ba*) - I put in a bid fairly near the end, but there was someone more determined to get it.
Are the Young Gods still going? I have L'Eau Rouge, TV Sky and their Kurt Weill albums.

using the same handle everywhere makes things fairly transparent.... The Amati Eefer went for like 430€ - a bit too much for my taste (and budget). The missus is already complaining about too many instrument cases anyway...
The Young Gods are going strong, still touring and releasing albums. Didn't know they were known outside of the country.
I remember when they started...jeez, it's twenty years already. Time flies.
I recently discovered the band below - too bad they don't have a CD out yet.

i do like both metal, traditional, jazz, blues, and classical music(and so on...). no differense to me.
it just have to be intresting to listen to. if the music is boring. i turn it of.

Nic, I like your style, what with the wide variety of music you listen to. I try 'em all and always find something new to play and listen to, even if I can't figure out what it is! A friend recently gave me a CD by a group called the Subdudes that still has me scratching my head . . . they sound like a mixture of Django Reinhardt, Motown, Seldom Scene, and late 50's Bohemian . . . whatever that stuff was, I enjoyed it.
Heck, I often get called upon where ever karaoke is going on to do "Funky Cold Medina" (with a little "moonwalking" thrown in). Life is fun and all the more so because there is so vast a variety of music out there.
Grab that clarinet and Get Down!!!

Weird, I just bought this Cd on CD Baby.. and it came on friday.
I can't say I'm a huge fan of it yet though.... I prefer the micheal Lowenstern CD "ten Children" that I also purchased.

Well, since Jethro Tull DID get the first "Heavy Metal" Grammy (R) (beating out Metallica and pissing my brothers off), I suppose I like heavy metal. I named my first-born after Ian Anderson! (yes, he's a boy)

We played part of Cornelius's arrangement of "The Patient," which he stopped halfway through after realizing he would have to pay royalties. Then he wrote a piece "in the style of Tool" entitled "Watch Me Die." It's excellent. He says he's already written material for the next two Edmund Welles albums, one of which will be coming out sometime next year, if all goes as planned. I can't wait.

Sorry, guys, I don't agree that Led Zep is "heavy metal"!!! I'd call it more "prog rock" myself...

Dreamtheater (more "art metal")
AC/DC
Motley Crue
I also like lots of Nic's suggestions above. My shelves are full of everything from country to Fanfare Ciocarlia (awesome...but the lead clarinetist just died!) to the "obligatory" classical and jazz clarinetists. As well as soundtracks to Xena, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and North By Northwest!

Love metal along with a whole lot of classical, classic rock and prog. Top 4 bands (not all metal) are Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Megadeth and Dreamtheater.
Metal bands I listen to (various sub-genres) include Pantera, Symphony X, Metallica, The Black Mages, Nevermore, Fear Factory and lots of other random bands.
